The Mail had a picture of his grandfather a General in the army so I suspect he would have helped Starmer's father and Starmer went to a Grammar school. Hardly a picture of a normal upbringing and better than most.

Yep, just another champagne socialist pretending to be in touch with working people.

Hardly a picture of a normal upbringing and better than most. People who I grew up with on the same council estate went to Grammar Schools, they passed the 11+ same as what Keir Starmer did. Their fathers were scaffolders and worked on building sites. The street and area where Starmer grew up was ordinary, the kind of home and area where no doubt some posters on these boards may live. Keir Starmer "got on" in the world because he was clever, like many who passed the 11+, it was not because of money or wealth, or because of who he knew, it was because he had ability and perhaps a hunger to work hard and succeed. Some of the posts decrying Keir Starmer are now merely personal attacks, but I suppose thats all you have left now.

I'm interested in the builders and scaffolders to know what areas they were in to get into a grammar school. Oxted in Surrey has always been a rich area since at least WWII.

Why do you believe that the son of a scaffolder from a council estate cannot go to Grammer School, or that a person from such a background would not be capable of going to a Grammar School. ?
I can assure you that kids who went to our local Grammer School were not all from well to do, middle class families, and one lad who was a near neighbour had a father who was a scaffolder, we lived on a council estate built in 1969 / 1970.
Oxted is a place of mixed housing, including social housing.

The amusing part of my phone call, the guy I was speaking with is upper middle management, who has come from genuinely humble roots. If he doesn't know who would?

It is quite posh now but when I was growing up it was full of builders and scaffolders and lorry drivers and char ladies such as my family. They were solid working class folk, which meant that they did not, use their backgrounds as an excuse for failure. Instead, like my barely literate but devoted parents, they said, blimey, this 11 + lark, all you have to do is sit on your bum and think, so how hard is that ?

Surely him of all people must realise the opportunity going to a Grammar school gave him, because his parents probably couldn't afford a private school.
Why oh why, oh why, would this man try to abolish Grammar Schools and punish parents for wanting to pay for a better education for their children?
The same with Angela Rayner both her and her husband used the Right-to-buy brainchild of Margret Thatcher to BOTH of them buy TWO separate Council Houses under the Scheme, then sell them off at a vast profit. Now Angela Rayner wants to abolish 'The Right-to-Buy' because it's causing a social housing shortage.
Why oh why, oh why, do these two double standard hypocrites ^^ want to abolish everything that made them who they are today?

Dunno why are politicians always trying to back pedal in front of the electorate the very decisions they took for everyone. Without their permission as it happens.

Well it was - his private school fees were funded by Surrey County Council and then a bursary from the school itself. Nice if you can get it - saves going to local bog-standard comp with the rest of the working class kids.

Well, no, it's not. But it summarises quite well what passes for debate in here, even by those who think they are clever.
