This I think, probably has less to do with sandeels and more to do with the EU attempting to show the UK who the boss is. As far as the EU is concerned UK waters belong to the EU, it's up to the government to stand up to the EU. Unfortunately on this front the government have a poor track record, and I'm sure the EU are thrilled at the prospect of a pro EU Labour government who regardless of Brexit will be EU law takers.
