...OBESITY!
... findings that are being presented at the European Congress on Obesity in Venice that are cementing our reputation as the "sick man of Europe" (UK women are actually in worse shape than the men).
We have a way to go though before we catch up with the Pacific island nation of Nauru ... where 72% of the adult population are obese and 95% are overweight.
The rise in obesity since 1950 in the UK:
1950 <2% 1980 6% ... the start of comments that there is an "Obesity crisis". 1993 13% ... suggestions that obese people who refuse to lose weight should have "restricted health care" cause an "outcry". 2024 29% ... the NHS is "at risk of collapse before the end of the decade".
Tomorrow I go for my dialysis ... there is a 20% chance that the nurse who attends to me will be obese/overweight (the private company who provide the dialysis do seem to employ fewer obese/overweight staff than the NHS ... the NHS Kidney ward has noticeably more of them). On my way to the hospital I will pass several obese uniformed hospital staff. If I take a walk round the hospital corridors i will pass a parade of obese patients and staff. I will see a number of morbidly obese patients using wheelchairs and scooters. I haven't seen ANY signs around the hospital about the need for patients (and staff) to "Watch their weight".
One interesting statistic is that obese/overweight people are more likely to have their cancer detected at an early stage than normal weight people ... because overweight/obese people are considered to be "At risk of cancer". I have a suspicion I may have cancer ... maybe I should spend a few weeks fattening myself up?

I thought that, as part of the economic recovery from Covid, we were expected to go to the local restaurants and stuff our faces with as much vigour as possible.
To be honest, I never took a lot of notice of the Great Flu kerfuffle and I have been fine. My brother did and he ended up with a stroke. Overall, I reckon that the best idea is to print all these government decrees on soft paper, so that ultimately they could be put to good use.

Certainly the last couple of days of good weather have allowed the scale of obesity in the UK to be on display.
Short of banning most of the processed foods that are on sale in the UK I'm not sure what can be done.
