A former Royal Marine commando who was charged with spying for the Hong Kong intelligence service has died, police have said.
Matthew Trickett, 37, who was on bail, was found by a member of the public in a park near where he lived in Maidenhead, Berkshire.
Thames Valley police said officers attended and administered emergency treatment but he was pronounced dead at the scene in Grenfell Park on Sunday. The force said: “An investigation is ongoing into the death, which is currently being treated as unexplained.”

Not like the good old days, when you were given a revolver and were left alone in the room to be seen to do the right thing, what, what.

Oops didn't notice a thread had already been started on this. Moved from elsewhere. Police say the men supplied information which could be 'useful to an enemy'
Two men have been charged with spying for China under the Official Secrets Act, the Metropolitan Police have said. Christopher Berry, 32, and Christopher Cash, 29, have been charged with providing prejudicial information to China following an investigation by the Met's Counter Terrorism Command. Between December 2021 and February 2023, the men allegedly obtained, recorded and published information "for a purpose prejudicial to the safety or interests of the state" and which could be "directly or indirectly, useful to an enemy". The Met has described it as an "extremely complex investigation" into "very serious allegations" www.gbnews.com/news/china-spies-two-men-charged-counter-terror-investigationYet both these alleged traitors were released on bail rather than being remanded in custody. Incredible. I see you have already come to a verdict. Notice the two who claim it are one who worked for British Intelligence and the other for Amnesty International, which has a prejudicial view on Chinese human rights matters. I think the saying is, this stuff is above your pay grade.

I agree, his demise is certainly to shut him up, but what we can not know is what it was they wanted shut up and therefore who the they were. The biggest problem in intelligence is to figure out who is working for who. You see it is a major part of the job and what you get trained in as a spy is to conceal who it is that you are really working for, and in many cases an agent works for more than one organisation. It's all smoke and mirrors, and if you manage to make any sense out of it, then chances are someone has given you just enough information to come to a reasonable conclusion which is the wrong answer.

China's government is an enemy regime. It's intelligence service is an enemy force. Those engaged in espionage against us, for China are those they'd kill to keep quiet, if caught by us.
We had no motive to kill anyone who has info we'd be interested in. They have motive to prevent us finding out that info, i.e. the details of the rest of the Chinese spy network.

Either way, it suggests that he's guilty and he's either topped himself because he knew the game was up or, as you say, the Chinese did for him before he could talk.
Interesting.

China certainly does have a spy network. It's got military satellites scanning every square inch of the US of A, so no need for weather balloons. Where you and many who influence you go wrong with China though is their motives. The classic error is to imagine the Chinese think like Western powers think. They absolutely do not. The basic philosophical position of Chinese regarding war is that war is a lose - lose situation. This comes from two sources. There is the ancient Confucian philosophy which is still just as relevant today in modern China just as our Christian church and our celebration of Christmas is, and then there is their century of humiliation where war brought them to their knees, and during the latter part where Mao was a warrior mindset and many felt they did too much fighting and not enough production. There was the great famine which almost wiped them out, so they are very careful now. They also learn from History and see how the two world wars destroyed the so-called greatest empire on earth.
So China's motive is two-fold. They are strongly motivated to stop war happening, and that means right from the very seed of the disagreement between countries, and the other motive is to be the slickest and best in industry via fair competition. They see power as the power of their industry and commerce. They play fairly, but where they get their advantage is through strong academia.
Now if you consider all of this to be true, and I have no reason to lie to you, then you can reason that the spying they do is to facilitate these two things. They want good political relations and good industrial relations. They would prefer to increase trade with the UK in a win-win scenario, where we benefit and they do. In order to achieve these goals they need to understand our political system. This is why they have these research groups. Their remit is to foster better UK-China relations. For example if the UK is upset about something to do with China then they want to know what has upset them, so they can correct it. It's the trick of nipping things in the bud. The reason they spy is they don't get a frank discussion with British politicians and civil servants. As you are likely aware many are corrupt and many lie about most things. Actually Chinese private companies have the same approach. If the customer is ever niggled about anything they want to know so they can pass on the word to the factory floor. Remember, their strategy is all about beating everyone else by better performance. Think Eastern martial art. It's very disciplined.

This is your problem. Here is the situation with steel and aluminium production.
You don't have any answers. You are as witless as Biden and his tariffs.

Of course I have answers. Embargo China. Move away from lithium ion batteries, utilise hydrogen more. Do as JCB do.

I agree with the sentiment, but realistically I think any trade embargo would only hurt the UK. Rather than an abrupt halt, I think the government should slowly distance itself from China and cheap Chinese goods.
