Judges have been told to consider more lenient sentences for offenders from “deprived” or “difficult” backgrounds. The Sentencing Council, the official body responsible for setting guidelines for judges and magistrates, has for the first time spelt out “mitigating” factors relating to disadvantage that courts should consider before passing sentence. The guidelines on “difficult and/or deprived background or personal circumstance” state that these factors include poverty, low educational attainment, experience of discrimination and insecure housing. The council went ahead with the changes, which took effect on Monday, despite warnings from Alex Chalk, the Lord Chancellor and Justice Secretary, who said the guidance was “patronising” and “inaccurate”, and risked making poor schooling and poverty excuses for offenders to commit crimes. During the consultation, concerns were also raised that the new guidelines could lead to better-off, middle class offenders from secure homes being “unfairly disadvantaged” by being handed tougher penalties for the same offence. It was also pointed out that many people from deprived backgrounds do not offend. The Blue Collar Conservatives, a group founded by Esther McVey, the minister for common sense, told the council: “We believe this is extremely patronising, not least to law-abiding working class communities. “Often it is actually those who come from the poorest communities who will be the victims of the crimes in these cases. Low educational attainment and poverty are not excuses to commit crimes.” www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/04/03/judges-consider-softer-sentences-deprived-criminals/Read between the lines. The sub heading should actually read: 'Softer sentences for minorities', because make no mistake, that's what's really going on here.

Judges have been told to consider more lenient sentences for offenders from “deprived” or “difficult” backgrounds... That describes pretty much all criminals. Read between the lines: Softer sentences full stop. The exact opposite of what's required.

I was under the impression this is already happening and has been for a long time, so in other words if it goes softer than it already is they've stopped short of saying we don't intend to lock anyone or groups of people up for any form of misdemeanor crimes. The JSO mob will be popping the champagne corks.

No prizes for guessing where he originates from, and no doubt will never be deported back there, it will be up to the UK tax payers to keep in prison, mind you he might just get a slap on the wrist knowing the court justice system.

It's actually quite sensible really, one imagines the whole point of wanting to keep anyone out of prison is so they don't learn how to be better criminals.....since the criminals are in charge of prisons what's the point in sending them there?

It's a wonder they haven't made their way to the chartered French dinghy service, they sound like the caliber of most of the boat people heading to the UK.

No one learns how to be a better criminal in prison because it's full of the shitheads that got caught.

You do have a point and t might make us wonder why prisons have been left to the prisoners to run . Imo the people in charge see little difference between the criminals and victims of crime when it comes to the great unwashed . Just two cheeks of the same arse ..as they say. Unless they are the kind of victims that suit the woke agenda.

...Imo the people in charge see little difference between the criminals and victims of crime when it comes to the great unwashed... And, to be fair, that's often valid. Just look at the stabby gangs: All too often todays victim was yesterdays perpetrator. It actually suits everyone else to have them wiping each other out.
