At an unimpressive “14th lowest” on record, this is astounding news for the winter following the “hottest year on record.” Undeterred, the US government headline writers at the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) today went for “Arctic sea ice reaches a below-average maximum.” Note the long-term average (1981-2010) is only 15.65 mkm2 and 15.01 is within 2 standard deviations (see below, screencapped 14 March 2024). Once again actual events work against the doom laden scenarios presented to us with our daily bread. |

I am not too sure how to take all this climate change lark. For centuries brave men and women risked and lost their lives searching for the North West Passage. And now the ice caps are melting and it is becoming a reality everyone is moaning and groaning and acting as though their favourite toy has been taken away.
Summer is on its way and a with it the demo season. We really need a new craze to keep the loonies happy

I think we have to take it as a bit of a con, supported by some as a means of control, supported by some scientists as a means of being published and having a career and supported by the well meaning and the gullible because they believe it implicitly. I am not clear however why many will not engage in some form of debate over the many questions it raises as that is the very essence of the scientific method. It has become more cult than science which is very worrying as any form of religion brings out the worst in people. |

Some years ago, when the Arctic air temperature was much higher than normal ... though still below zero, it was expected that the icing-up of the ocean would be delayed. However, much to the surprise of the scientists, large areas of sea suddenly froze over earlier than usual. The scientists had to don their thinking caps to figure it out.
One thing is certain though ... the total MASS of sea ice ... in the Arctic and around Antarctica ... is steadily decreasing. Glacial ice on the mountains throughout the planet is also decreasing.
Global warming has the potential to cause periodic extremely cold "arctic winter spells" in the UK and Europe. Heat can move north into the Arctic and displace the cold Arctic air south (an Arctic vortex event). This could begin to happen on a regular basis ... rather than once a decade or so.
There is also the possibility of a sudden "Blue water event" ...when a major storm breaks up the ice ... causing it to be carried out of the Arctic. The ocean will then absorb the sun's heat and the permafrost sea beds in the shallower parts of the ocean will release massive amounts of methane.

More shocking news, it was reported that in the last 30 years a whopping 50% of summers were recorded as being hotter than average.
