Can you guess what it is?
To be fair, I think we need some context here. The claim comes in the form of a list of 7 in order of how good they are. This is the view of a professional who advises large numbers of people on business advice aimed at the person or perhaps people who think, I'd like to start my own business, and ask which business is the one that is going to be the easiest to do, least risk, described as "very profitable" and is the kind of business that you have a high chance of succeeding in as we check through the stats on which work and which go bust. The chap who gives the advice employs over 1000 people, so you can be fairly confident his information is good in the sense of management consultancy. He's not someone trying to sell a pyramid scheme or any crap like that. I'll publish the list of 7 after I've seen a few ideas from you guys. I want to see how far off the mark you are. You never know, you might hit the right answer first time.

Dunno about the most profitable, but years ago I was looking for property in the home counties and every other place seemed to have offices and/or workshops attached. Most everyone had a side line and was at least half his own man or woman as a result, which has always struck me as a good way to live

Most everyone had a side line and was at least half his own man or woman as a result, which has always struck me as a good way to live These places tend to crop up on Google Maps these days. We seem to have all these residential houses with various businesses running from them. I have a feeling it is possibly in part due to those who work for firms but the firm wants them to set their own limited company up so they don't get all the employer liabilities. There are a fair few with workshops and the like. The best one I saw was this guy who had invented this device that fits inside a car tyre and it transmits vibrational measurements as it goes around. It's for use if you are a car manufacturer and you are testing a prototype car. Quite a few large manufacturers of cars use his machine. It's not the kind of business though that rolls off the tongue regarding making suggestions. Like you say, a job on the side.

Tobacco smuggling is apparently more lucrative than drug smuggling. So after illicit canabis farms, of which there must be thousands, I imagine iffy baccy must be fairly profitable.

My old man was involved in Tobacco smuggling back in the day to supplement his pension - he was raided a couple of times by Customs & Excise but they never found anything..

When it comes to tobacco, the cheapest thing to do is grow your own, it's not illegal to grow it, only to sell processed tobacco (and has been since the days of King James the first). The plants are not covered by the same onerous tax laws.
If every smoker got a pipe and grew their own the state would lose a fortune in tax.

It's nothing illegal. This guy is an advisor to normal UK taxpaying business, so do try and think what you can do that is legal which requires the least effort for the most secure financial returns.
