We should probably have a thread on this as I think the wording is very ambiguous and what seems designed to tackle Muslim marchers for Palestine seems to be able to tackle other types of what might be legitimate protest. What is the new definition of extremism? It says extremism is "the promotion or advancement of an ideology based on violence, hatred or intolerance, that aims to: 1. negate or destroy the fundamental rights and freedoms of others; or 2. undermine, overturn or replace the UK's system of liberal parliamentary democracy and democratic rights; or 3. intentionally create a permissive environment for others to achieve the results in (1) or (2)" The government said it was "narrower and more precise" than the previous definition, which was introduced in 2011. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-68564429

Yes - it doesn't stop anyone campaigning or protesting. All it does is cut off taxpayer subsidy - which in a cost of living crisis would be a very good idea.

How did anyone muss the Naming of five groups that come under the new law .
Bet some on here are disappointed that 2 so called patriotic groups are named.
Rishi Sunak said the government would update its definition of ‘extremism’ in response to widespread protests and rising hate crime[p groups.
The groups he named were:
The British National Socialist Movement Patriotic Alternative CAGE Muslim Engagement and Development (MEND) Muslim Association of Britain

It seems completely pointless to me. The govt can already withdraw funding from groups it doesn't like, for whatever reason. It doesn't have to justify its action by defining "extremism". And it doesn't go into law so it's of no use to the police.
What I'd hoped Gove would do is address the problem of religious ideologies which don't have to obey the law. For example "the promotion or advancement of an ideology based on violence, hatred or intolerance" seems to be a very accurate description of Islam. Sharia law (which nearly half of muslims want introduced into the UK) explicitly promotes violence (to women and homosexuals), hatred (to infidels) and intolerance (of free speech or criticism of islam).
Yet it seems that this definition of "extremism" does NOT include religions. WTF. The extremists we're having trouble with are muslims who are following Islam FFS. But that's all OK. Cop out. Gove has bottled it.

I think we all know that this will be carefully interpreted to avoid the elephant in the room.

Re: the patriotic groups named and shamed, I know very little about the British National Socialist Movement but would suggest they rename themselves, if only as a matter of optics. As for Patriotic Alternative, they have published an open letter to Michael Gove condemning his 'lies'. You won't read about it in the legacy media, so here it is in full: www.patrioticalternative.org.uk/open_letter_michael_gove
