If the universal mail service is unprofitable in these modern times surely it is only right that the service is cut to reflect reality. After all London used to have 6 deliverys a day - nobody would suggest that service should have been retained. What evidence are you basing your claim "that nobody would suggest 6 deliveries a day should be retained"? feel free to make that suggestion..

Frankly, deliveries could be whittled down to one on Monday, Wednesday, and Tuesday. Businesses requiring deliveries every day could pay for such a service.
The days when letters were needed to be delivered throughout the length and breadth of the land the next day ended years ago. The focus now should be on collection and delivery of packages and parcels.
Royal Mail workers are speeding the demise of their jobs — the more they strike, the more users move to other ways of communicating...
Certainly normal post could be cut to just 2 or 3 delivery's a week and if people want to pay extra for next day delivery that would still be an option.

What I cannot understand is why is it still called "Royal Mail" ? Its basically a private company, and as such should not be allowed to use the name "Royal" as though it was a national / state institution. EVERYTHING the Tories have privatized ends up providing a worse, poorer service ... everything, from mail to water, from electricity and gas to trains and the NHS. But of course someone makes a lot of money, usually someone connected to the Conservative Party. Libdems privatised it mate, and Labour privatised the Post Office.

The universal service is the guarantee to deliver to any address in the UK for a fixed price, that is what is unprofitable. If Royal Mail ditch the universal service, then good luck getting any post in a rural location... you will have to collect your own mail from the nearest big town. You are also not understanding what Royal Mail actually does. Royal Mail is not going to close because it stops deliver letters. It already delivers huge amounts of parcels and packets via your postie. eg it delivers millions of Amazon parcels each day already. Royal Mail wants to scrap the universal service so that it can shut down depots and cherry pick the locations it delivers to. Again, your postie will be gone, and you will have to pay extra to have some twat in a battered van throw your mail roughly towards your door, and again, good luck if you live in a rural location.

I'm in the middle of this. Basically, the Royal Mail CEO has ripped up all the agreements it had with the CWU and gone to war with them. I have never seen anything like it, he is all over social media like a teenage troll, constantly goading the union and making threats to his workers. He has obviously asked his senior managers to go out of their way to wind up their staff in an effort to force a wildcat strike, so they can they run to the courts and get an injunction on the national strikes. I have never seen an atmosphere so toxic between managers and workers. It is obvious to all why he is doing this. The share price has tumbled, allowing a large shareholder to increase his stake in the company ready for a takeover. Who just so happens to a billionaire that has made his money in the European parcel business. So now we get to the universal service (letters). Nobody wants it. It is impossible to make money from. There is a national network of trucks, trains, planes and vans that have to run 24/7 even if there is no mail... because there might be some, and the 1st class, 2nd class promises have to be kept. So, what Royal Mail want to do is run the universal service down, first no Saturdays, then it will be three times a week, then twice, then once... and probably delivered by some gormless agency worker on the cheap. The 10,000 job cuts are a red herring. Royal Mail has spent the last few years building parcel & packet sorting capacity. eg If your Amazon order can fit through the letter box then Royal Mail probably delivered it. They basically want to replace your postie with an "owner driver" ie self-employed twat in a battered white van doing his best Hermes impression. Hermes is cheap though and doing well. I use them and they are OK and do a reasonable job. There was one time when a package arrived without it s contents because some bastard had stolen it, but I assisted the management of the firm by giving the necessary evidence so the cunt could be fired, and they were very grateful for my help. It's never happened since, which goes to show taking a constructive approach is better than just being an irate customer. Hermes are useless around here, forever delivering to the wrong address or claiming to have delivered when they have not. If that is the future of the postal service then god help us.

The Post Office is owned by the UK Government through the Postal Services Holding Company Limited. This holding company also holds the governments stake in the privatised Royal Mail plc. Many individual post offices (way over 90%) are privately owned and run under franchise arrangements. There have been privately run local post offices around the country for years…

Everybody that pays their NI is entitled to a state pension. Should the rich pay into your private scheme too? lol. You are also wrong on the tax part. I want a high tax, high spend economy, I just want no part of your bullshit fairytale economics that it can be funded by taxing "the rich more"... when the reality is EVERYBODY will have to pay more tax. I would also support taxing dividends at the same rate as income tax and I have actively said that IR35 is a good thing because it stops people operating Personal Service Companies. BTW shareholders are not parasites, practically everybody working for Royal Mail owns shares in the company, and everybody's pensions are based around shares. I am saying it is dodgy when the company's board decides to payout massive dividends and bonuses and then claim near insolvency the year after.

When Royal Mail was privatised they agreed to cross subsidise the letters with parcels. Royal Mail's European parcel network GLS makes a ton of money. Depends if you think Royal Mail should be allowed to be sold off to a foreign hedge fund, who strip out and sell the profitable GLS and Parcelforce, and then plead poverty saying that Royal Mail cannot deliver letters anymore. To be honest it makes no difference to me, I'm a trucker, I'll always be in work. If you don't mind going to pick up your mail from a warehouse miles away I suppose that is fine too, because make no mistake no other private company is going to take over the work to deliver to every address in the country.
