Two children of a disabled man whose suicide was triggered by being wrongly found “fit for work” have told MPs how their decade-long search for justice has proved the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) was responsible for their father’s death.
Anne-Marie and Declan O’Sullivan have told the Commons work and pensions committee that completing “what feels like a 100,000-piece puzzle”, following a 10-year investigation, has “eliminated” any uncertainty and shows clearly that DWP breached it
The UN committee will be examining the government’s progress since being found guilty in 2016 of grave and systematic violations of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, with most of those breaches caused by policies introduced by Conservative DWP ministers.
The figures revealed that between December 2011 and February 2014, 50,580 recipients of ESA had died. Of this number, 2,380 – or 4.7% – had received a decision that they were fit for work

Surely this is the incompetence of the work assessment contractors, the government does not directly deal with the work capability decisions.
These out-sourced agencies need to be accountable, I've read some appalling decisions. Did I read the other day about them stopping the disability benefits of a one legged charity runner?.

Dunno.
A guy that I employed as a gardener was on ESA for five years without his case being reviewed. His money hit his bank every week, but other than that he had no contact with the DHS (or whatever it is called these days). He spent his time chuntering to himself, but so do most gardeners. And he did a good job, so there was no reason why he should not have joined the swollen ranks of the employed, but he had just slipped through the net.
A lot of it seems to be down to geography. In London it is hard not to be employed and I suspect that the DHS is more worried about running out of customers than throwing folk off the dole queue

From a casual observance of the locals it seems there are some over 60's who limp to the van in the morning and crawl out of it at night and others that do little more all day than open the door to Amazon and Deliveroo deliveries . Which more or less brings me to the conclusion that there are some that do and there are some that dont want to .
Unfortunately when there is a clampdown on benefit scroungers some genuine needy are caught up in it . So who's to blame , those who abuse the system making it not fit for purpose or the government in trying to administer it ? I go for the former .
I do have a bit of skin in the game having not worked for 4 years due to ill health . My couple of claims for assistance, unemployment and PIP have fell at the first fence as according to the assessors In the first instance Im wealthy (lol) and in the second Im fit for work (double lol) .I was the 60 something year old I first mentioned But it is what it is and IF genuine needy were getting the support they need then great but when you see some of the obvious dossers on the take well Im not sure what anyone expects .

Unemployment benefit is means tested if you have over £6.000 I think in savings you don't fit the criteria. Has for pip it's a very hard Benifit to Claim so that doesn't fit in with you calling people scroungers dose it . There might be a few and far between that cheat the System . If you think that justify over 200,000 people losing there life's shame on you that's all I can say .like I said think it was Blair who introduce the medical Assasments don't know what gone wrong since then . But there has.

But there has. Indeed the savings was one thing the other was household income so with the Mrs earning good money that was the end of it . PIP is easy if you know how to play the game , just tell them you are alcohol dependent and you have a 61% chance of the claim going through ,Asthma 50% ,Back pain 60% even Agoraphobia gives you a 55% chance of not having to leave your house to go to work Feck me even Golfers elbow give you a 45% chance of getting out on the course 7 days a week ! But yes its a tragedy that some people die because they cant cope . Makes me laugh though that the family of the man you refer are blaming the DWP for their fathers death . Maybe they should have been doing a bit more to help themselves
