A new report reveals the UK has spent £24 billion on jobless 'legal' migrants since 2020. If the benefits paid to foreign students are included then the cost goes up to £36 billion - link - linkAnd lets not forget posters, this report refers to 'legal' migrants only. It does not include hundreds of £millions of tax payer pounds spent on illegals. We must be the biggest mugs on the planet. Shocking if true looked up who Migrant crisis was and it was set up. By a key Supporter of Brexit. All I can say he his part of the problem It was well known by studies that none Eu migration was more of a strain On the Economy then EU migration. Even studies by Migration watch backed That fact up even every study that was pro migration backed up the fact that None Eu migrants contribution less then.EU.migration. Even remain Campaigns and supports warned that Brexit. Was opening up the Gates to worldwide immigrants All I can say you made your own bed now lie in it . No Charlie, you're wrong. You appear to labouring under the illusion that it's up to people smugglers or the EU who comes to the UK and I accept, it may look like that. But the reality is, believe it or not, it's up to the government. Why the government have decided to allow foreign criminals in their tens of thousands to cross the channel and to allow 700,000 legal migrants a year to come to this country is one of the great unanswered questions. It's also the reason Reform UK are doing so well.

You might think it's Rubbish But there no other reason You appear to be saying that the UK is being invaded by illegals from the EU because of Brexit. Therefore by your reasoning, if the UK was still in the EU hundreds of thousands of illegals would not be crossing the channel in dinghies. And you're right. If we were still the 28th state governed from Belgium they wouldn't need dinghies would they. They'd just get on a ferry, in fact P&0 would have to put extra ferries on to get the population of Africa to Dover.

We HAD the right to eject persons who came here under EEC right of FOM who did not secure employment in 3 momyhs. But neither labour nor tory would do it Brexiteers often forget about this. Or perhaps they never even knew. Of course, the proper solution is to put tight controls on entry, rather than chasing about looking for people with a certain status. The EU system allowed the government to fail without anyone noticing or holding them accountable.

In an ideal world you would be absolutely correct, however...
As for the EU allowing the UK government to fail I don't believe there were any sanctions in the FoM Directives for governments who declined to take advantage of the safeguards allowing them to reject applications for residency from EU nationals unqualified to exercise their treaty rights.

My OH is obsessed with travel insurance cover, she's got us that much cover if we burn our lips on a cup of coffee we'll be covered.
But she has a point, if we fall ill in a foreign country our level of care (if any) will depend on our medical insurance, yet in this country any one and everyone from any part of the world can use the services of the NHS with or without cover, and those without will get a very strongly worded letter asking 'can they please pay for their treatment', which we know they never get back.
It's this country it's fucked up.

Allow vs compel. Unless the govern tracks and chases, there is no control and practically no accountability. The proper way to deal with it is strong requirements for entry. The Eu FOM system is designed to prevent this, set up beggar thy neighbor competition between states and have government expensively chasing their tails if they want to do anything about it. You saw what happened circa 2015-16 and where governments who were uneasy with the flow were left

I don't believe your comments about what the FoM system was designed to do are even close to being factual.
The principal difference between the UK and the other members is that it is difficult in most of the latter to take up permanent or long-term residence without at some point coming into contact with the authorities, at which point the bona fides of the would-be resident would be open to question. This is especially the case if the applicant claims to be taking up employment, wishes to take advantage of the healthcare system or needs to have actual proof of residence in countries that maintain a population register (which is most of them).
In the UK, on the other hand it was (and still is) all too easy for anyone not exactly officially resident to evade official contacts and to disappear into the grey economy. It's a racing certainty that nobody in authority, and definitely not the police, will ever come looking for you.

Dan, you have just reminded of the other relentless political pressure created by FOM.
For a government to do anything substantial about the situation created by FOM, they need to closely track the activities and status of all their denizens.
Of course, a parsimonious solution is not to set up a soviet style population surveillance system, but rather place strict requirements on entry.

Well, of course most European governments have long since had such systems in place. It's only the UK where the authorities maintain the fiction that it is still a 19C trust-based society in which people are to be allowed to come and go as they please and just get on with their personal affairs (cannabis farming, say) without any serious risk of official interference.
The arrival of the Empire Windrush and all that's happened since have put paid to to that panglossian notion.
