I realise that diversity is a hobby horse of yours but I think that the issue is more fundamental than that: The government (aided and abetted by the usual rag-tag assortment of media, lefty lawyers and pressure groups) has spent over a decade systematically dismantling the police. With swingeing cuts to pay, conditions and pensions. No support from the (politically appointed) senior "Management" and endless denigration in the press. And, of course, they have to deal with an increasingly entitled and irresponsible Joe Public (who's a Grade 1 arsehole at the best of times). It's simply a job that no one wants to do any more. So they can either start looking after officers and rewarding them suitably or they take whatever dross they can get. |

You appear to be relaxed about the Met, and other forces, recruiting semi illiterate police officers in order to meet diversity targets. If in your opinion this politically correct incompetence is not a race to the bottom, what would you call it? You claim it is [The Police] "simply a job that no one wants to do any more". You are wrong. That is the excuse peddled out to justify the police discriminating against white applicants while lowering entry test standards for minorities. When my son applied to join the police he was told that all places for white entrants had been taken, he was invited to reapply in two years time. In a nutshell,the rank and file have been attacked from all sides the cuts made later followed by a recruitment process that followed trumpeted as recruiting more police when in fact it was only replacing those already lost though time,crime and population moved on so it wasn’t even keeping pace. |

But a key part of the Police Uplift Funding program is to increase the numbers of minority officers - so if they are prioritising diversity targets rather than simply trying to increase numbers then it's hardly surprising they came up short. |

To be honest my jaw dropped yesterday when I read the article of the driving instructor who got his car stuck in flood waters, a passing motorist came to the rescue 'as the fire brigade watched on' because they weren't allowed to rescue him because they can't enter waters over 4 foot, I did think it was a joke at first, what the hell is happening to our emergency services.

It seems the met failed to. Meet all its recruitment targets not just the diversity one. |
