So what was the concept of work and who said that?
This title was lifted from the back of an album cover in 1969 called 'A Rainbow in Curved Air'. It's an avant-garde poem about a world of peace.
Fast forward to 2024 and we do indeed have peace. We have peace on the production line. We have peace on the railway lines as the unions go on strike, in fact more and more people are forgetting the concept of work. Why is this? Someone pointed out the other day there are 10 million people in the UK below the age of retirement who choose not to work. Indeed it is their absolute right to choose this if that is what they want. It's wrong to think these people are funded by the taxes others pay. They are people who can afford not to work because they had a successful career and made enough money and were sensible to save it so they had that option if they wanted it.
My theory is this. Take a look at the goings on with the post office or even the inquiry into covid. The masses look at how modern management works and think, shit, these people are dangerous. I could be doing a job and get stitched up, shouted at, abused, conned insulted, humiliated... It's hardly the picture you want in order to persuade the more talented people back to work. It really is the number one reason and by a long stretch. Another reason might be they don't need the money, although a lot of intelligent people do get very bored without things to do and if the things to do were enjoyable and their work were appreciated they would likely be back on that train and start commuting to work again, perhaps part time, but even that is good because they can then pass their experience on to the younger ones. Instead, the ones who stay on are the ones who need to for financial reasons.
