I like the song but this is about what we used to have.
Recently family members have been in hospital where they have a written right to request a nurse or doctor of their own sex, whenever it is possible. This is particularly important for procedures involving baring parts considered private by most.
The idea was based on heterosexual behaviour and a general assumption that men and women were attracted to each other, so there would be little chance of inappropriate behaviour, or arousal if same sex staff were working on the patient.
As there has been a real rise in lesbianism and homosexuality, especially in Ambulance and nursing staff this principal is no longer valid, if it ever was.
The added rise of trans people in care industries just complicated the matter further.
Is there a solution to make men and women feel safe when vulnerable to intrusion of their private space by care staff?
Perhaps the law needs to be changed to allow people to ask for another staff member, if they feel unsafe or insecure because of some attribute of that particular staff member?
