I use to wear a white poppy in remembrance of all the civilians who died in the wars.

You know something Monte, everyone has heard those words, that verse. Yet it means so little to so many. And that's the truth.

It is right that we remember the brave young men and women who have died fighting for their country.
However, I was watching that new film on Netflix, "All Quiet of The Western Front", the other day, and it made me think why we don't express our outrage at all these world leaders that allow things to escalate to war, and then send their troops into the meat grinder.
Instead of thinking we "won the war", we should be viewing the First World War as one of the most shameful things in the history of the world.

Avent we held remembrances since 1945 and the queen didn't come to the throne until 1953 I think I looked it up The first formal Remembrance Day was 11.11.1919 and set in motion at the behest of King George the Fifth. I had to look it up because while I remember seeing pictures years ago of of a former King at such an event I couldn’t recall which or when they were taken When I read Reds post I thought yes, there can’t be many still alive who remember anyone other than her at the ceremony.

Yes, I have to say it wasn’t until my youngest did A level history that she dug up the details of how Gavrilo Princip shooting the ArchDuke WHERE he did caused WW1 that the senseless stupidity of it all hit me. Had the assassin been almost any other nationality and had it been anywhere else and had society in general not pissed royally on the appearance in public at a state event of the woman he loved … millions would have lived beyond their twenties in not one but TWO world wars and the world would be a very different place indeed. That said, the world had we NOT won either wouldn’t be one many wouldn’t have appreciated much. As a six foot three blonde steel blue eyed Viking I would have been ok, but not many of the rest of this street would. Mind you, without the massive cull of European males both wars created ……..

A good project to bring the meaning of Remembrance Day to communities who might not otherwise be involved.

Instead of thinking we "won the war", we should be viewing the First World War as one of the most shameful things in the history of the world. Warning warning warning. Ding dong ding dong warning. I actually agree with the dodgy man. And I have made it perfectly clear many times. The likes of Field Marshal Douglas Haig, 1st Earl Haig, KT, GCB, OM, GCVO, KCIE should have been put up against the wall and shot. How more stupid can you get by sending thousands of men over the top of a trench into miles of machine guns spaced a few hundred yards apart. Ripping them to shreds. Then had the audacity to sign the death warrants of those who suffered from the effects of shell shock. Branding them as cowards. Thank heavens a few years later those disgusting people, many who bought there commission were replaced by real soldiers. Like Field d Marshall Montgomery and General Eisenhower. In terms of the OP. The man and his music, although not a bugle, says it all. www.youtube.com/watch?v=B804bBxIVpA&ab_channel=Andr%C3%A9Rieu

Did we win though? Millions dead and injured, economies wrecked for decades. Instead of looking at the war time leaders as heroes, why don't we question why they allowed things to escalate to that point? We give them a free pass when we say things like "we would all be speaking German". The soldiers did their duty, but the leaders neglected theirs when they allowed war to break out. It was they that created the conditions for war, not the poor fuckers that had to fight it.

Gavrilo Princip shooting the ArchDuke didn't cause the first world war. He just fired the starting gun.
