Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg has been crowned the most popular Conservative backbencher in an annual survey by a leading Tory publication. The former business secretary pipped Miriam Cates, a rising star from the 2019 intake, and Suella Braverman in the contest - linkRishi Sunak take note: People want a proper centre right Conservative party and government, not a simpering hand wringing pro EU, pro immigration, centrist conservative party and government.

Rees Mogg is a good egg, he has authenticity, honest, straight, an oddity in politics. People object to him not because of his politics but because he was brought up with manners, standards, patience, and boundaries. A good man.

Miriam Cates was a remainer.
What were the Tories doing even considering her?
And apart from Kemi Badenoch's diet plan, why read Conservative Home ?

I agree, and his exposure on GB News has shown people he speaks common sense and is a 'good egg' as you say.

Red Rum That was clear by your distinctly unusual choice of referring to Conservative Home as a 'publication' .... in fact, thinking about it, I can only ever recall one other person having ever done so ..... the Whitehall Correspondent of the Daily Telegraph ! As a rule of thumb, the infinitely preferable 'Conservative Woman' website is for discussions of Conservative ideas, whereas 'Conservative Home' (even they describe themselves as a 'conservative news and analysis site') has always appeared to be more 'in house' and perused by local Party committee members etc. I'd suggest that hypothesis is borne out by the diversity of votes in the favourite 'Backbenchers' poll. Suella for instance came third with a measly vote total of 33 from a total vote total numbering 611. Only about 1 in 10 voters chose Sir Jacob .... my guess is the electorate comprised mainly of local Party Chairmen or Vice Chairmen ('Chairpersons' to the more Woke amongst us) who loyally voted for their own back bench MP. That said, well done to Sir Jacob, his popularity is well deserved and he most definitely would have received my vote. As a past avid listener to the Moggcast every fortnight, the fact that it was a joint venture between the Editor of Conservative Home and Sir Jacob (Paul Goodman posing the questions, Sir Jacob answering them) it doesn't shake my faith in the validity of the result, however if I had been inclined to rain on Sir Jacob's parade, I'd suggest that his victory was greatly assisted by the split in the Suella vote, thanks to the timing of her dismissal by Prime Minister Rishi. The vote for 'Favourite Minister' was a two horse race, with Kemi winning 'Minister of the Year' gaining 174 votes, with Suella as runner up on 124. Had Suella been clearly recognised as a backbencher rather than a Minister during the period of voting, I do wonder whether she might have topped any total Sir Jacob achieved. Of further particular interest to our GB News correspondent, the same 'publication' also took a poll as to what TV channels its readers regularly follow. The results of which it says will be provided 'later this week', so that should mean imminently. Fingers crossed for a GBN win .... I'll try to update.

The OP seems to be conflating who a Tory publication think is the best Tory MP with what the people think.
Of course the vast majority of the latter have never read it, and many are not in any case dyed in the wool Tory supporters.
Anyone who thinks Rees Mogg could ever be a man of the people is kidding themselves, as many clearly in this thread are doing.
Still, it was an amusing read.
Not quite up there with the comedy classics, but worth a chuckle nevertheless.

Your post seems to be little more than whataboutery for the sake of whataboutery. Quelle surprise.

So who really cares who an insignificant number of Tory readers of an obscure publication most people have never heard of anyway think is the best Tory MP? That this unrepresentative little group thinks it's Rees-Mogg just shows how out of touch with ordinary folk they really are.

But given your responses thus far the casual observer could only come to the conclusion that you care. My only intervention was to rubbish your implied assertion in your OP that what these few unrepresentative prats think is representative of the people. Beyond that I dont really care at all. They are never going to make any difference to what happens going forwards. It is your apparent belief that they represent the views of the people that is my concern, because it demonstrates to me yet again the frequently displayed belief amongst Tories that they are as one with the people. Clearly so out of touch as to have no clue about how out of touch they are. I challenged you on the basis of you being a prime example of the species.

Then immediately said this.... "People want a proper centre right Conservative party and government" The clear implication by the context that you are trying to make out that the views of the former are representative of the latter, which is of course so much horse shit.
