You are living in a dream world . Our local Tesco has no security and staff are told to say ‘ Can I help you’ when approaching a shop lifter . They are told NEVER try to stop them . We had shoplifters take a trolley out if the store with bottles of booze . I have a friend who works for a major supermarket - they are often on duty overseeing the self serve checkouts and are told not to challenge anyone they see scanning expensive loose produce as cheap potatoes or carrots Indeed. The training modules address this . Tescos have a much more direct approach to underage sales and drunks buying booze than shoplifting. At least in the stores without security. |

Some Tescos have security , the smaller ones tend not to . Workers are told not to try to stop shop lifters( I have no idea what security staff are trained to do). In fact this is addressed in the training modules . Staff are told to say ‘ Can I help you ‘ to anyone shoplifting but never to try to stop them . It doesn’t make any difference if an old man thinks otherwise , that’s the reality . |

In supermarkets, Police are called if someone is caught shoplifting. How do they know when to attend if there is no security? |

I would suggest that when the security alarm goes off when a thief leaves the store with a security tag, that a bottomless pit opens up and the thieving so and soes disappear forever. Trouble is I would have gone down it several times owing to system malfunctions.  |

Shoplifting and pickpocketing have been mentioned well before Charles Dickens and even I believe in the Bible.
In some places thieves have their hands cut off. It seems to reduce the number of incidents greatly so maybe that is the answer.
In my opinion the crime becomes serious when the thieves are armed.
And the incidences are more numerous when the goods are sold for drug money.
