.... to replace the cities with thousands of smaller communities?
In the 70s it was said that the cities were no longer viable as places where people could "enjoy life". Large parts of London and other cities would be demolished. Computers and robotised factories would provide the funds to implement the change. The working week would be much shorter and people could have holidays lasting for months. No more than a couple of million workers would be needed to run the country.
There was a week or so of enthusiastic media publicity about how our government was going to create a bright new future for us.
