Yesterday morning the Tory party felt in crisis - on its way to a crushing election defeat followed inevitably by a civil war between one nationers and populists that might tear the party to pieces and consign it to years in opposition if it survived in any meaningful form today.
How different the picture looks today. Braverman massively overplayed her hand last week. Her political career looks effectively over. The One Nationers have moved decisively to take advantage and Braverman's actions have not only nerfed her own prospects but the prospects of the populists she agrees with. They have bought in a far more centrist Cameron and will seek to shore up the blue wall giving the traditional One Nation wing of the party the chance to rebuild the Tory Party from its core base after what still looks like a crushing electoral defeat. The Populists? Well I am sure they will kick and scream and have another go at seizing control after the election but they look and sound already like a busted flush. It was telling that they could only rustle up the likes of Jenkins and Rees Mogg to put their case last night.
As for Sunak, well the party knows he has failed. They will keep him on as notional frontman but little Rishi is very much little David Steel in Spitting Images caricature while the big boys perform the David Owen role of running the show. His political career will be over as soon as the election has gone. Cameron I think may be around for a little longer making sure that the post election rebuild very much follows the traditional One Nation route.
As for the populists. They may well fight another battle but seems they have lost the war. One or two may slope off to Reform as Farage looks to be gearing up for another go but they will find over time that Farage will sideline and fall out with them as quickly and brutally as he has with so many people in the past. Outstanding communicator but lousy team builder.
