Councils are a perfect example of companies that know exactly what their incoming revenue is and should plan their spending accordingly. And I was under the impression that they weren't allowed to borrow. So how do they go bust? They must have been putting their money in risky investments I suppose, which is crazy. They should have learned that lesson a few years ago when they put their money in Icelandic banks.

When it comes to the next General Election how are Labour going to explain why their council has gone Bust.
We know they will blame central government for under funding, but that wont wash, people should demand to see what 'Labour councils' have squandered tax payers money on, and think why would I vote for a Labour party that's gone bankrupt?

Councils can't go bankrupt ... they can't escape their debts by doing so.

Now Nottingham is on the verge of declaring bankruptcy: Labour-led council is set to go bust over £26million budget gap. And tory-run NottinghamSHIRE are staring down a £60 million hole in their budget. This isn't working along party political lines. As, the experience of Thurrock and Woking will tell you.
