"As Pielke notes, economic impacts, whether good or worse, tell us nothing about climate impacts. If you want to analyse them, you need to look at the actual weather and flooding data. And according to the EPA, there is no evidence that climate change has made flooding worse in the USA. All we see is the usual mixed bag, including increased flooding magnitude in some areas, mainly the Northeast, and decreased magnitude in others." notalotofpeopleknowthat.wordpress.com/2023/11/08/us-flood-trends/It is the usual story of reporting by the MSN that everything is getting worse where the evidence shows nothing of the sort.

The "evidence", as far as global warming is concerned, is that we are heading towards a scenario where the Arctic ice gets so thin that a major storm causes it break up and be transported out of the Arctic Ocean. The open water of the Arctic will then heat up and cause the permafrost on the sea bed to melt and release vasts amounts of methane. A chaotic change in the world's weather could then suddenly happen. I haven't seen any "skeptics" come up with a none Global Warming explanation for the thinning of Arctic ice.

It seems that according to some models and research the Arctic sea ice was as thin as it is now in circa 1940 with boats able to navigate teh NW passage from West to East in clear water. However the OP was as regards the misinformation being spread as regards flooding and rainfall in the US as indicators of a climate emergency. It seems neither the rainfall nor the flooding are on average worse with normal variations being the order of the day.

Since satellite records began the total amount of (mass of) sea ice in the Arctic has declined by 50%.

Since satellite records began the total amount of (mass of) sea ice in the Arctic has declined by 50%. No doubt it changes all over the place as we are in a warming trend (why of course and to what degree is conjectural). Franklin went in 1845 and the sea ice extent over winter was what killed him and his men and has been declining dramatically since then to 1940 then it bounced back a bit and is now on a downward trend although the last minimum was 2012 and has recovered a bit since then. Satellite is only available from 1978 and it is used to confirm models whereby 1940 was the previous minimum according to those models.

I do not dispute that although there appears to be recovery in recent years. What I did say was that some research places a minimum in 1940 as well which matches the present day, confirmed by the ability of wooden boats to navigate the NW passage from West to East at this time, normally not possible. This means there must have been an ice recovery in the 50s to the 70s and then a subsequent loss of thickness.
