A throw away line in the cost of climate change thread by Dappy sent my mind off on a mathematical tangent.
Dappy stated that over the last decade his average age was 55. So how old is Dappy now?
My first thought was he must be 60 but...
51+52+53+54+55+56+57+58+59+60 = 555 which divided by 10 = 55.5
So I started the decade when Dappy was 50 but...
50+51+52+53+54+55+56+57+58+59 = 545 which divided by 10 = 54.5
So I thought Dappy must be 59.5 so then I would have to start the decade when he was 50.5
50.5+51.5+52.5+53.5+54.5+56.5+57.5+58.5+59.5 = 550 which divided by 10 = 55.
Success at last but surely there's an easier way of solving the problem than my rather trial and error method?

I doubt he thought that deeply about it and he is most likely 60.

Mathematically if the average is exactly 55yr 0day over exactly a 10 year period, then there must be exactly five years either side of 55 in which case today would be my 60th birthday.
While I am 60, I am nearer by 61st birthday so The average age over the last ten years would now be around 55.75.

Mathematically if the average is exactly 55yr 0day over exactly a 10 year period, then there must be exactly five years either side of 55 in which case today would be my 60th birthday. While I am 60, I am nearer by 61st birthday so The average age over the last ten years would now be around 55.75. That's how I got to my original guess. I was just wondering if there was a mathematical equation other than adding up all the ages you've been in the last decade and dividing by 10. Is it as simple as X = Y +Z/2 where Y is your average age and Z is the period of time over which Y is calculated?

Probability is a branch of mathematics which deals with uncertainty ie odds. Useful in poker but not so much in working out averages. I see I'm just going to have to wait for The Baron for a definitive answer.

Factoral 10 / [Number of divisions] gives you 5.5 , which gives you bump of 0.5 needed
In the case of 45, the start is 40.5

Formula is quite simple (where X is age now)
(X + (X-10))/2 =55
Solved by 2x-10=55*2 2x-10=110 2x=120 X=60

Well it is approximately 58 years since I was born and only 9 years until I draw a pension.
According to my maths that means I have completed about 86.5% of the journey from birth to pensioner status, lol

But I have hopes of being near enough to it now for the next hike to hit lower down the age scale than me. But you never know.

I started walking 10 miles a day to get fit. By the end of the week I was 70 miles away and had to get a train home.
