.... and just when your jaw couldn't drop any more, we have this ..
The Government has spent more than £26m on hotels in Pakistan for Afghans eligible to move to the UK due to the backlog in the UK's refugee and asylum system. Approximately 3,250 Afghans who are eligible for resettlement in the UK are stuck in accommodation in Pakistan, the Government said this week.

Those figures are for 2022.
Expect the number of grants for 2023 to be very much higher as Rishi's pledge to reduce the backlog becomes a reality.
Maybe it will be but that will show that the people coming in ARE not here illegally.

Not content with miscalling and misrepresenting Palestinians, you are now at it with Asylum seekers. The people coming across in boats are only deemed 'illegal' when the system decrees they are, resulting in deportation. Nope - claiming asylum does not make you a legal migrant - all it does, is offer protection from sanctions as a result of your illegal entry. The main problem is that the 'legal' routes have been, to a great extent, closed. The people who brave the conditions in the channel are, in the main, fleeing from persecution. Many want to come to the UK because they have family. The Tories always have some section of society to 'other'. Immigrants are defenseless against the attacks on them. That such a high %age are granted leave to stay and a further number have their request granted on appeal shows that forcing people to face the gruelling and dangerous crossing is inhumane.

How many would you let in through these 'legal routes'?

If we were to 'trim our advertising' for other immigrants and sought our work force partially from asylum seekers we could balance our need for immigration and our need to control unwanted immigration. Asking people to put a number on immigration is a silly question.

Asking people to put a number on immigration is a silly question. Not at all - it is all a question of cost. If you are advocating a specific policy it is wise to have some idea of the cost before you go ahead with it.

Again, an answer that demands a numerical answer which nobody outside the specific agencies can quote. It would, in my opinion, be cheaper to use qualified asylum seekers who are granted refugee status and leave to remain in our society.

Interesting snippet from Parliament last week - and bear in mind this is a supposed Tory MP who says this as though she is proud of herself. Siobhan Baillie (Stroud) (Con)I thank my right hon. Friend and the Prime Minister for listening to my Stroud constituents’ concerns about illegal migration and speeding up processing, and for taking seriously my calls to close a migrant hotel in my patch. I caution Labour Front Benchers against playing political games over which hotels are closing, because not only do they have no plan themselves, but they do not know what many of our constituents have been through, because Members of Parliament, local police and local residents have worked hard to keep incidents out of the newspapers, so that they do not escalate.Just let that sink in for a minute, Asylum seekers are committing crimes that are being hushed up and the Police and Politicians are complicit.
