If they get compo I want some as well . My ancestors were poor , indentured servants and out of work poor ... And that's the thing: We "Abolished" slavery at a time when we were still forcing children up chimneys. Poor children were routinely sold into slavery in the guise of "Indentured servants" where they would often be worked, starved and beaten to death. Let's jump in the time machine, hop back 200 years, and explain to them how much better off they are than a black slave. I wonder what the response would be? Exactly. Anyone would think that blacks were the only ones who were hard done to. And as for compensation, is there a statute of limitation on slavery and colonialism? How far back can we go? Seeing as it is thought to be proper that Britain should pay reparations for colonialism and the Empire, I thought maybe we should jump on the bandwagon so to speak. Now the Romans had an empire - of which we were part, for nearly 400 years. (About the same as the British Empire so a direct comparison there). They invaded us and occupied our country, and plundered it for its resources. They built lavish villas with baths and central heating while we shivered in sheds. They enslaved us and even mutilated our corpses after death. They were bastards. Therefore I think we should be looking for some compensation. Maybe I'll write to the Pope. He's a Roman isn't he? Well a Roman Catholic anyway!

If it wasn’t for Britain and the abolitionist movement, the slave trade would not have stopped.
It was far more than our navy which meant we were able to end slavery worldwide, it was an idea that men are equal (sorry ladies, the idea you were equal didn’t come until sometime later).
Slavery until then was practiced world wide and it certainly was not limited to race.
Many slaves throughout history were white.
The word itself comes from ‘Slavs’ because of the huge number of them enslaved throughout history & taken as slaves by Muslims.
