Britain's 2016 vote to leave the EU was the most momentous democratic decision ever made in British history. No development since the Second World War is likely to have more far-reaching consequences for the British economy, society, politics and culture. Some predict it will lead eventually to the break-up of the UK, others to the end of the EU, others to an enhanced likelihood of war in Europe and beyond.
The vote to leave took just a single day, but the decision to call the referendum followed several months of agonising in No. 10, while the ground for Britain's departure was sown over many, many years.
When Britain entered the EU in 1973, it was known as 'the sick man of Europe'. When it voted to leave in 2016, it had the fastest-growing economy in the G7,and it was both the world's top soft power and one of its most creative and tolerant nations.
Why have we risked all this? Ask the guilty men, who, for reasons of personal gain, misplaced ideology or sheer folly, have jeopardised all our futures.

It is clear that spoiled privileged people who claim superiority even by devious means thought to create an isolated realm over which they would throw a cloak of their own ideology sealed in law. They nearly got their wish. Covid and Putin have destroyed that dream but in the meantime the UK has lost momentum, credibility and stability. There is no change for the better. Brexit never could deal with the reality of international issues which always will affect national process well before any tinkering with fishing rights or how many hedgerows should be left per hectare.
The UK is no better than it was in 2016. There is a real sense that ir is worse and Brexit is offering nothing to help. Not in justice, policing, education, health, standard of living or border security.
It was promises unable to be kept...very Tory. Very Boris. Very slick salesmanship.
And an utter waste of time.

We did not enter the EU until 1993. In 1973 the UK joined the EEC.
The EU is an organisation whose goals we never shared. We were never consulted on joining. We were lied to by the advocates of European Union.
Our exports to it are now worth more than they were before the referendum, even with inflation taken into account.
Brexit is a success.
Calm down dear, we're a democracy.

I'm astounded that the attacks by Hamas have not been blamed on Brexit yet - but give it time...

You didnt adjust for the value of the pound. It is down again this week to 1.14 to the euro from 1.17 six months ago. That adds to your inflation.

How can you quote figures for 2022 by a source dated 2015? You are completely ignoring inflation and the fall in the value of the pound. What is really telling is that you count the success of Brexit purely on exports. Meanwhile the UK is crumbling and none of the promises of Brexit are able to stop it. Utterly pointless and caused deep damage to the morale and reputation of the country.

So you don’t think the UK had the fastest-growing economy in the G7 when it voted to leave the EU in 2016, when it was both the world's top soft power and one of its most creative and tolerant nations? If not, WTF do you think the UK is going to achieve on its own? Many of its inhabitants are in a in a pretty sorry state right now…

Nothing involving being in or out of the EU will bring the changes necessary to start rebuilding the UK.
What was promised has not happened. Living standards, lower prices, protecting borders, miraculous fishing catches,...none of them were in the sole hands of the country. They all depended on outside elements in the same way that they affect every country. And the EU had no voice in elections, or national domestic or foreign policy. Especially due to the opt out option.
No country can be completely "sovereign". Didnt someone tell you that?

You're just a bitter selfish expat living in France who lost their "European citizenship", so personally for you it is a pain in the arse. The world, and Britain certainly doesn't revolve around your personal needs. Brexit has emancipated Britain from Brussels. Best decision this nation has politically and economically made in the last decade.
