Judges have been told not to send some convicted criminals to jail due to prisons nearing capacity, according to a report. Lord Edis, the senior presiding judge in England and Wales, has ordered, during a meeting with senior judges, that sentencing of convicted criminals who are currently on bail be delayed from Monday, The Times reported. The newspaper said those spared being put behind bars could include those found guilty of burglary and rape. The Times quoted an anonymous senior judge as saying that they had been “ordered/strongly encouraged” not to send to prison a defendant who appears before them on bail due to concerns that the prison system is at capacity. www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/government-alex-chalk-england-wales-tom-tugendhat-b2428161.htmlThis is incredible, at a time when we have never had more foreign criminals in British prisons and the vast majority of burglaries go uninvestigated, judges are told not to jail burglars and rapists! Is it me?

In the leftie world where there perpetrators are victims too then every one is a victim . Victims and perpetrators are just two cheeks of the same arse to them . This also solves the problem of a low conviction rate for rape . If the sentence is extremely light then there is not so much backlash when innocent men are convicted on sparse evidence .

Yet another utter shambles from a government that needs to go.
If we want to be governed by logic rather than by the tabloids, we could copy Netherlands. They used to incarcerate broadly the same number of people as us. They realized that was dumb, stopped sending people to prison who really didn’t need to be there, spend some of the money saved on probation and rehabilitation, pocketed the rest, reduced reoffending rates which reduced crime and hence victims of crime and even now earn an income by renting out otherwise empty prisons to other countries.
We send so many people to prison for trivial offences that there is no room left for serious offenders. You really couldn’t make it up.

As mentioned elsewhere if there isn't enough room in our prisons, make room . If you don't want to end up as the tenth man in a cell made for two then don't do the crime .

If you don't want to end up as the tenth man in a cell made for two then don't do the crime . i’m sure there’s a much easier way to deal with the problem. Erect a tent city next door to Gary Lineker’s mansion and put the worst of them in it for example …
