As Gerald Kaufman once famously said in a speech to the House of Commons "Hamas is a truly nasty organisation, but they were democraticaly elected, therefore they are the only game in town" the British Jewish MP meant that you HAVE TO talk to them, because there is no one else who legitimately represents the Palestinian people.

Just out of curiosity how do you negotiate a peace deal with someone who has just come into your country, killed many of your innocent civilians and taken hostages back to their country. I am keen to know. |

Gross exaggeration There were daily killings in Northern Ireland, not a week ever went by without bombings or explosions There is no low level terrorism in Northern Ireland, only petty criminal acts linked to sectarianism, most people reject the past and terrorism. The conflict in the Middle East is not going to go away, and Israel will not solve anything by turning large parts of Gaza into piles of rubble, or by making Palestinian civillians refugees in their own land, All this will do is create more bitterness and for some, a desire for revenge. You either talk about peace ( with the legitimate representatives ) or carry on with more of the same, and thats the choice. |

The difference between NI and the Middle East is that SF/IRA were pretty much militarily defeated by the UK spy network.
The GFA was the best they could get at the time.

However the representatives have diametrically opposed aims that have been at odds for over 100 years in one form or another. Remember the Omagh bomb happened after the GFA which brought 'peace'. |
