I've just seen a post on X by James Melville suggesting that there is not so much a left v right division in politics nowadays. He argues that the division is now becoming authoritarian v libertarian. I tend to agree. The upcoming smoking ban for anyone born after 1st January 2009 is a symptom of the move to authoritarianism.
Have a think about the current issues and whether we can attribute them to left/right or authoritarianism/liberalism. ULEZ supporters are authoritarian? Net zero - supporters are authoritarian? Migration - no borders supporters are libertarian? Am I right?
Now which political party is the libertarian party? I can't see one.

Marxist missionaries are the new authoritarians.

I would argue that liberty has been under constant attack since the rise of mass-immigration and moronic no-borders ideology.

Whenever I do the political compass test I'm always about two squares to the left of dead centre. That makes me mid way between authoritarian and Libertarian and slightly to the left of centre. Lefties who insist I'm the Grand Wizard of the local Staffordshire branch of the Ku Klux Klan will of course be disappointed, tbh I'm almost disappointed myself. But if I answer the questions accurately that's the result I get.

The political compass is a good guide. I am pretty much in the centre, but some forummers might think I am right wing.
Anyway, in the other threads, 15 minute cities is an authoritarian government trying to restrict the movement of people to a small radius.
The libertarian will go on a 55 mile Sunday afternoon drive just to take in the views.

I used to be on the right of the centre line at 1.0 in 2015. Haven't moved from the centre on the vertical axis.

I wonder if James Melville (o/p) has ever heard of or seen the videos of Calhoun's famous rat experiments from the late 50s? In short everything remains hunky-dory as long as availability of resources stays ahead of population growth. That is, we can continue to enjoy "freedom, liberalism and an open society based on choice, liberty and human rights" for just as long as the positive relationship between resource and population growth still holds. Otherwise, it's societal collapse. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Behavioral_sink

Anyway, in the other threads, 15 minute cities is an authoritarian government trying to restrict the movement of people to a small radius. The libertarian will go on a 55 mile Sunday afternoon drive just to take in the views. On an earlier incarnation of this site i recall a chap who had some quite interesting things to say about ‘libertarianism’. I just wish i could recall their forum name. Their view seemed to be that many confuse libertarianism with anarchy. They held the the view that it was ‘statist’ to operate a fire service from public taxation, that the service should be available to any who wish to pay for it but those who don’t need to be prepared for a lot of very unpleasant things to happen if their hone caught fire and even more unpleasantness if it spread to a neighbour’s property. They said it should be a matter for the individual to arrange some form of provision for that, not a matter for the state to intrude upon I’m not sure that sort of thing could ever be done at a practical level but that does not negate the concept. As soon as i saw the opening post in this thread i thought of the political compass website. One of the more fascinating analyses that site used to provide was a positioning of various UK past governments.

I’d never heard of that. Interesting set of questions. I ran through and ended up as not having a single closest match, i’m 75% Rommel 75% Patton…. I’ve often heard the phrase ‘his men would follow him anywhere, but mainly out of curiosity’. God forbid they ever manage to pin that on me…
