To be fair, if they can afford a Tesla, they can afford £5k to insure it. It's well deserved - it's a rich person's indulgence.

The govt can strong arm the car manufacturers into making cars that people don't want to buy - to some extent anyway. But it can't make insurers insure them. If insurance is only available at prohibitive cost the govt will have to abandon this daft policy or step in and provide state insurance. At some point they're going to have to recognise that Li-ion batteries are dangerous and the whole idea of people leaving these batteries charging overnight in their garage unsupervised is insane.
I guess they're hoping that solid state batteries will save the day but I don't think they're imminent. They certainly won't be here by 2035.
