EUSSR must overhaul decision-making before enlargement -Franco-German document BRUSSELS (Reuters) -The European Union must radically overhaul its decision-making and funding before it can accept more countries to join the 27-nation bloc by 2030, a paper commissioned from experts by the French and German governments said, polarising EUSSR countries. Eight countries currently have official EU candidate status - Turkey, Ukraine, Moldova, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Serbia - while two, Georgia and Kosovo, are potential candidate countries. "For geopolitical reasons, EU enlargement is high on the political agenda, but the EUSSR is not ready yet to welcome new members, neither institutionally nor policy wise," said the report, presented to EUSSR ministers in Brussels on Tuesday. The document, seen by some officials as an opening bid in a long debate over the coming years on how to reform the EUSSR, got mixed initial reviews from EU government ministers. "It was able to concentrate the debate on a few points and at the same time polarise the answers of Member States," Pascual Ignacio Navarro Rios, Spain's acting Europe minister told a news conference. The document, which states it should not be seen as representing the views of Paris and Berlin yet was presented by the two countries, says the EUSSR should move to taking all of its decisions by a qualified majority, rather than reserving some areas for unanimous agreement.

So basically EFTA membership - which Parliament comprehensively rejected 4 years ago with almost the entire Labour Party voting against it.. Not sure if it would be similar to EFTA, maybe, maybe not, but of course the make-up of Parliament will be very different after next years general election. I would rather be part of the European Economic Area, either EFTA or simply EEA rather than be completely cut off from Europe as we are now.
why do you think the Labour Party in Parliament do not agree with you?

Well that didnt take long - the EU pees all over Starmers cunning plan... EU bridles at Keir Starmer’s plan to seek ‘much better’ Brexit deal
“Unless Starmer is prepared to take a quantum leap and change Labour’s position on membership of the customs union then any renegotiation will really be not much more than a rebranding exercise,” one EU source said.
“You could call it the Dover deal, but it will still work in the same way.”
“Starmer does not want to rejoin the EU or the single market. It is not a big change in the UK approach, so why should the Europeans rethink everything?” said a diplomat from a national government generally sympathetic to closer trade ties.
“In terms of friction the TCA works better for the EU and countries with trade ties to the UK than it does for the Brits. What is in it for us? What do we get?”

Makes me laugh watching Starmer parading around Europe like the big statesman, the only time I've seen him crack a smile is shaking hands with Macron, and Macron all smiles thinking ..... he can't believe his luck if Starmer becomes Prime Minister, we might as well have elected Macron... because Starmer will be his puppet.

It seems the EUSSR are dying on their feet and are short of money now treasure Island has left their dictatorship.
Britain could rejoin the EUSSR as an “associate member” under plans for the bloc’s expansion drawn up by France and Germany.
The UK would be expected to contribute to the EUSSR’s annual budget and be governed by the European Court of Justice in exchange for “participation” in the bloc’s single market.
The plan will be officially unveiled on Tuesday afternoon as Sir Keir Starmer, the Labour leader, meets Emmanuel Macron, the French president, in Paris.
Sir Keir has said he would prioritise getting “a much better deal for the UK” as part of a review of the post-Brexit trade deal, due in 2025, if he wins the next election.
We used to be rule makers in the EU, now with every 'agreement' we sign we will be rule takers, good ini't.

Yet another reason NOT to vote for the red socialists. Think we've got problems now? You ain't seen nothing yet if Labour gain power! They always manage to screw up everything.........Being independent is what will keep us safe. We just need a parliament that cares for the British population and has a spine to do the hard things. Currently, they are in the process of selling us out. They are not worth a vote except to remove them all and replace them with competent people who believe in democracy.
France and Germany's 'secret plan' to drag Britain back into the EU WITHOUT a referendum, aided by Starmer: How plot dubbed 'Macron's onion' - which was devised with 'Labour in mind' - will try to lure UK back under Brussels' control as 'associate' country
A new Franco-German plan for differing layers of EU membership has included a direct offer for Britain to one day sign back up to the bloc as an 'associate' country.
A 60-page paper - published on the same day that Labour's Sir Keir Starmer held talks with French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris - suggests 'even the UK' could return as part of an 'outer tier' of membership.
The report, commissioned by the French and German governments, envisages four levels of European integration with an 'inner circle' of Eurozone nations at its centre.
Britain is touted as a possible future member of the third tier, which would be based on a Norway-style relationship with Brussels.
This would see the UK fall back under the jurisdiction of EU judges, make contributions to the EU budget and rejoin the bloc's single market, which would likely see the return of free movement.
There has been scrutiny of the role played by Labour ex-prime minister Sir Tony Blair in what is being viewed as a secret plot to 'reverse Brexit'.
