Ex-Foreign Office mandarin Lord McDonald admits he openly told colleagues he voted Remain after finding fellow civil service officials 'in tears' after the Brexit vote. The civil service code of conduct includes strict guidance on Whitehall officials maintaining political impartiality. It states that civil servants must not allow their 'personal political views to determine any advice you give or your actions' and should 'serve the government, whatever its political persuasion. However, after the EU referendum result, Lord McDonald a former top civil servant said he told ministers he voted remain and that ... ... 'The main feeling in the Foreign Office building was of mourning. People were in tears. People were in shock'.
Is it any wonder Brexit has not, as yet, been the success it should have been. 70% of MP's and the establishment have been fighting against it since 2016. Democracy? Don't make me laugh. link

Now we know for certain how the Blob feel.
Thanks for the confirmation.
Whitehall needed overhauling.

We all know it is a success by the way the remnants are missing on any UK achievement threads. Funny how they are the ones who only start threads if they think to majority of the electorate want to rejoin the EUSSR or Labour are ahead in the polls.

Gosh .... imagine that ?, civil servants actually have opinions How dare they Yes, of course they do. But, like the police and armed services, they should not let their political views sway their actions - which are to serve the state without fear or favour. The politicians are there to make law and decisions, the civil servants are there to implement them.

Whitehall needed overhauling. The Soviet that Blair left in his wake should have been tackled by the first conservative administration with the power to conduct the assault. Sadly, the easy path was taken instead. We now have a civil service who sees the bulk of the UK people as its principle political enemy. Btw - I understand that civil servants of foreign heritage are now requesting they be allowed to conduct their government work from their 'home countries', rather than having to stay physically in the UK

Can you imagine how much better we'd be doing if the whinging whinging undemocratic sabotages remoaners would stop trying to Cancel Brexit, while we have them lurking in the shadows and the thought of a Labour government the EU will never be dead and buried for the UK, because they want to revive it.

They have done everything in their power to block Brexit mate. They are fucking traitors in my book. And the labour lot would have us back into the EUSSR in a jiffy mate when they infest no 10.

Yep, there's no excuse. We have the daily commotion in the press and media about the 'cost of living crisis' and yet we haven't really begun to help British consumers out with lowering certain tariffs.

I saw the programme too. The person in question admitted it was highly unusual for such an admission.
Once again we get half a story in order to go over the same rinse and repeat threads that churn around in here.
The EU lives in your heads.
I wouldnt be surprised if some of those tears were about the hours and years spent working under one set of rules, and now having to spend years working under another set no one had the slightest idea of what they were. Certainly the leavers didnt.

Should the civil service not be allowed to vote or indicate which way they voted.
There are half a million people in the civil service should they all be silenced as in Russia?

We know the civil service is pro EU because Rum disagrees, we always know when we are on the right track when Rum disagrees with you.

The job of the civil service is to serve, not to lead.
Politicising the civil service would take us into Yes Minister territory.
Politicising the civil service would not be a good idea.
