Even if it means holding your nose. Even if it means voting for someone you don't like. Look for whoever is the least worst choice in your opinion and vote for them. Democracy was hard won and is easily lost. Do not take it for granted.
The day someone with power decides the public are "too stupid" to make decisions in the national interest, it's over. Dictatorship would follow. Wouldn't it?

Seems a bit churlish starting another thread on democracy in the mind zone, Vinny, when srb's thread has a good start.

His thread is about it not working very well. Mine is about the threat to it and the danger of it ending.
Democracy should not be taken for granted.

'Taking it for granted' is subjective.

Case in point, the referendum. So many fascists wanted to ignore the democratic vote because they lost. They still want to override it.
And in the USA a man who lost tried to overturn their election and sparked an attempted insurrection, one of his mental followers got herself shot dead for him. His refusal to accept democracy was inspired by theirs.
It's getting to a point now where if you lose a vote and you have a lot of anger and resentment in you, you're encouraged by like-minded extremists to go and protest, instead of accepting democracy and taking it on the chin.
Democracy was invented to provide a means of resolving differences of opinion peacefully.
If peaceful means go out of the window and the alternative comes back, the danger of civil war emerges. Democracy must be protected. Bloodshed is not an acceptable way to resolve political disputes.

That's an undisagreeable (is that a word?) point.

Democracy must be protected. Bloodshed is not an acceptable way to resolve political disputes. If you're talking about Trump he didn't call for insurrection. He said it should all be done within the law. What he claimed was that the postal vote had been abused by the Democrats because of the vast number of postal votes that flooded into the ballot boxes after the polls were closed - because of Covid allegedly. At the close of polls Trump would have won but the counting went on for many days after - and Trump eventually lost. It's perfectly legal to challenge the poll result - and it has been done before in the USA (with less justification). It's also true that if you want to rig a vote it's easier to do it via postal votes. The problem that Trump had was that the US judiciary refused to investigate the case. And THAT was the scandal.

No one in the UK disputed that leave won the referendum. As to what we do next or at any given point, that's up for debate, nothing undemocratic about that, in fact quite the opposite. But when you have insurrectionists inspired by a narcissist who refuses to accept the result of the referendum, I agree that's not democratic. In fact, as you say, a bit scary.

It's only eight years since the Scots had a referendum which comprehensively rejected independence, by a much larger margin than Brexit squeaked through.
And yet...

Fascist Europhile extremists wanted to ignore the vote because they only respect votes they win.
They would have destroyed democracy in this country for their beloved EU.

What did the twat mean when he said: Loads went to prison for rioting. One of his supporters got herself shot dead. Show me a politician that has never used the word "fight" in a speech lol. He signed off that speech with " go and peacefully protest". Did you watch the impeachment hearing? Trump's lawyers made mincemeat of the Democrats because they constantly do what you have just done... take things out of context. Check out this video that Trump's lawyer played during the impeachment hearing, in which they played clips of Democrats out of context to prove the point. Several of them called for the assassination of Trump lol.

The man lied after losing office. He incited a riot. One of his supporters lost her life. He stole classified documents. There was a leak of classified information at the same time and CIA spies inside enemy dictatorships have been caught and killed.

There was a leak of classified information at the same time and CIA spies inside enemy dictatorships have been caught and killed. Yup, the problem is he is going to point the finger at all those people in the video I linked... some inciting BLM based riots and people calling for him to be assassinated. He is also going to point to former Presidents keeping records and Hilary Clinton and VP Biden who were never entitled to have them. He is also going to point to election interference from (1) Hilary Clinton (Russiagate) (2) Joe Biden (Supressing the laptop story, lying during Presidential Debate). Yes Trump should be locked up. The problem is that America has consistently failed to lockup previous wrong doers, and are turning a blind eye to Joe Biden, so his two-tier justice narrative is going to cause chaos. If these parties have any sense, they need to find ways to ditch both Trump and Biden, and let the courts deal with them. The problem is they both know the only way they stay out of jail is to run again lol.
