Even fossil-fuel based energy can run into trouble. Thank your lucky stars you don't live in South Africa, where households can be without power for six straight hours at a time. The state utility company, Eskom, which supplies 90% of the country's electricity from coal, can't keep up with demand, and its plants are old and poorly maintained. As a result, rolling energy blackouts have been the norm since 2008. You'd think they could have solved that in fifteen years, wouldn't you?

So its energy rationing and higher bills - now that the costs of this lunatic charge to Net Zero are becoming more apparent by the day perhaps we can start having a real discussion about whether its worth it. So what happens now? My energy supplier has written to me a few times asking me to make an appointment to have a smart meter fitted, thus far I have always said thanks, but no thanks. Will the next letter come with threats of court action if I refuse? Seems that is what is going to happen - smart meters will be made mandatory.

They always said these would not be forced yet would be recommended. Keep us informed of any changes.

They cannot inflict this invasion of privacy on you mate and if they state otherwise you can take them to the cleaners. they can if you fall behind on your payments…

They cannot inflict this invasion of privacy on you mate and if they state otherwise you can take them to the cleaners. they can if you fall behind on your payments… I agree John but they cannot state it is compulsory to have them fitted. I have a mate in in Torbay just across the water from us who installs them and he told me they try and use every trick in the book to thrust them onto a person who doesn't fight back. If you ask these phone parasites to post a link to the relevant bill that makes it a requirement it is accompanied by an audible click as they hang up....And these so called smart meters only work on the customers chosen rip off and is no longer valid if you change your energy providers... So not as green as they would have us all to believe....

So not as green as they would have us all to believe.... not strictly true about the change of supplier. Gen 1 smart meters yes it is. Gen 2 work if you swap. The bigger scam is condemning yiur cooker if they come to change the meter Lowry Beck sent two twats to change our meter and they promptly declared our cooker unsafe and disconnected the meter because i refused to let their ‘specialists’ supply me a new cooker. They left two officially vulnerable individuals without heating on a day the outside temp was sub zero. When told to disconnect the hob so the central heating could stay on they said they were not qualified to do that. I have the audio recording I was told to phone Transco’s emergency number. I did, and within 15 minutes a very nice man was outside my home wearing a hazmat suit with self contained BA and the electronic equivalent of a mining canary. When he saw me alive and well and in the hazard area he looked puzzled, asked me exactly what the issue was and put all his hazmat stuff back in his van. He very quickly determined the twats from Lowry Beck were well out of order, rescinded their unsafe appliance order and took a proper look. His considered opinion was the hob was a bit long in the tooth and ought to be replaced in the next two years I looked up the cost of an electric ceramic hob, was pleasantly surprised, and asked this chap if he could disconnect the old hob and seal the pipework. ‘Absolutely’ he said. And he did. And it cost nothing, such work is paid by the standing charges … Fitting the new hob was a doddle for a bloke who wires up main guns and radars on frigates ….. The regulator took an exceptionally dim view of Lowry Beck’s people. They don’t have the smart meter contract any more stated (

As i said it was tbe case that 1st gen smart meters were not able to transfer to a new energy supplier. I don’t know why.
