Compared to petrol or diesel, cleaner burning, better for the environment. And cheaper.
But availability was dire.
A commercial failure.
Thoughts?

Not sufficiently cheaper than petrol to encourage enough people that the cost of installation and inconvenience in refueling was worth the effort.

It was quite popular in Holland when I lived there. It was cheaper than petrol and there was reasonable availability. It did cut the power of the engine significantly. A colleague of mine had his Escort converted to LPG and the tank took up most of the boot, but that's because the car still had a petrol tank - I don't think the LPG tank was much bigger than the petrol tank. The conversion was quite expensive too.
I still think that using hydrogen (to power hydrogen fuel cells) is the best way to implement electric cars - batteries are a dead end like diesel (only much worse). OK the hydrogen has to be kept under higher pressure than LPG but it's perfectly workable. And it can basically follow the same model as LPG and petrol in that you could fill up in minutes at a petrol station. Why we're going down this route of putting chargers everywhere and having to spend vast amounts upgrading the National Grid I have no idea. It'll never happen.
