Michael Gove has warned against treating the environment as a “religious crusade” as he called for a relaxation of some net zero measures. In an interview with The Telegraph, the Levelling Up and Housing Secretary cited Dutch protests over emissions regulations, saying that the “inflexible” application of rules designed to reduce pollution “leads to a backlash”. In his own department, Mr Gove admits the Government is “asking too much too quickly” of landlords. They will currently be banned from renting out their homes unless they pay for green measures, such as insulation and heat pumps, to meet a new minimum energy efficiency threshold by 2028. Citing existing financial pressures on landlords, he added: “I think we should relax the pace.” He also warned that Natural England, the environment quango, must “pause” a push to block new housing near more than 330 designated areas across the country unless councillors agree to introduce green schemes such as ultra-low emission zones (Ulez) and low-traffic neighbourhoods. www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2023/07/22/michael-gove-warns-against-net-zero-religious-crusade/Gove is not the only senior Tory who is calling for the relaxation of net zero rules, and it must be said, it was always going to happen. Forcing a green revolution on people who are struggling to pay for rent, mortgages and fuel is a recipe not only for electoral disaster but civil unrest. Even Starmer has allegedly got off the fence and told Khan to bin his insane Ulez plans. Although I tend to think Starmers intention is to give the impression he is against Ulez until after the election.

Yes, the recent by election was a wake up call for eco-zealots on both sides.
The public can see through the greenwashing and there will be violence if it's forced through.
In London there's already a huge resistance and a growing "Blade runner" movement who are actively removing and damaging the ULEZ cameras.
They enjoy a lot of support.

Apparently, and in spite of Starmers intervention, Khan is determined to push through with his Ulez plans. I just listened to someone on GB News who said Khan cant back down because the revenue from Ulez has already been accounted for, and probably spent.

Oh yeah, he's got to go double or bust but either way Khan's almost certainly gone in the next mayoral election.
The question is how much damage he does to Labour meanwhile.
If it's a lot, I expect the powers of any future mayor to be severely curtailed.

The labour council in Cwmbran put a camera outside the sports centre after a ‘fatality’ justified it. The only tiny problem being the fatality in question was a rocket that went astray in a fireworks concert and hit a spectator, who could not be treated because the car parking in the sports centre car park was so uncontrolled the ambulance could not get in Faced with such blatant abuse of the requirement to justify the presence of a camera, locals ‘necklaced’ it in the manner approved by Winnie Mandela. The council replaced it and the locals necklaced the replacement That was quite a while ago. They learned their lesson. Interestingly Torfaen have put the finger up to Twatford’s 20 limit. Almost every road now with a 30 limit has been set as an ‘exclusion’ as it does not meet twatfords criteria to be a 20. Only the cul de sacs off the main roads will be 20 and if you can get up to that while parking in them i’ll be impressed

What I like about this clip is, once they 'necklaced' the speed camera, rather than scarpering they just sat and watched it burn.

The extention of ULEZ will not be abandoned, because it cant be, its far too important in terms of polution and clean air, as well as climate change.
What Khan will do is amend it, perhaps delay it or alter its provisions to be brought in gradually over a longer period of time.
Gove is a Dinosaur if he thinks that measures to combat climate change are not important or vital, totally out of touch with both reality and the seriousness of what it could mean for all of us.
I am convinced that most Londoners understand and accept that something both had to be done, and needs doing, but they want the measures brought in more fairly and over a longer time span.

And I'm not convinced that fatalities on main roads (most A roads and some B) are reduced by keeping traffic at 20mph rather than 30mph. Residential side roads and are different — on some, even 10mph can be too fast.
But why are push-bikes, electric pedal cycles and scooters exempt from all road and speed restrictions? London borough of Bromley has signs pointing out that electric scooters are illegal, and I've not seen any round there...

Gove is a born liar, but on the other hand so is the Left central, because the other day you were all saying it has nothing to do with climate change.

We are in that crucial zone, 12 months or so to a general election. I absolutely 100% guarantee that if Ulez or any other net zero policy means electoral defeat then politicians, Labour or Tory, will drop them like hot snot, and both Labour and the Tories are perfectly aware that net zero is not popular with the electorate which is why over the next few months we will see Labour and Tory politicians going cool on net zero.

ULEZ has nothing to do with emissions, fiddler. It's because Khan's fucked up TFL and needs money. Londoners do not consent.

Khan has not fucked up TfL, the government have starved the authority of cash The number of buses and bus services has increased, public transport was to be hugely expanded both and around outer London under the ULEZ scheme. Remember that ULEZ is or was originally a Conservative idea, but backed by Labour

The drive to ban gas and replace with heat pumps has just run into the brick wall of reality... A major heat pump supplier has attacked SNP-Green plans to use them to replace gas boilers in Scotland, warning parts of the country are too cold for them to work.
Lord Willie Haughey, the business tycoon, said the heating system is unsuitable for the Scottish climate as its performance declines markedly in freezing weather.
The Labour peer said some units can stop working properly at temperatures of -5C (23F), or require more electricity to function properly, resulting in higher bills.
Parts of Scotland hit -15C last winter and the country holds the record for the UK’s lowest temperature of -27.2C seen in Braemar in Aberdeenshire in 1982 and Altnaharra in Sutherland in 1995.
The multi-millionaire, who owns a heat pump company, also warned they were noisy and only heated water to 54C (129.2F) – less than the 60C recommended by the Health and Safety Executive to kill the legionella bacteria.
