Dear Dan Dare, Yes, and let us face it, Britain's overall military forces were not in a very great condition at the beginning of either World War. The country's forces were not actually ready, and Britain should at least have stayed out of both wars until it had the chance to build up its strength, to help to avoid disaster and destruction. You say that "freedom" is not a cheap thing. But there is no evidence to say that Germany was actually a threat to British freedom at the time before the World War situations started. Germany never saw Britain as its enemy at those times. But Britain ruined itself fighting awful and not worthwhile wars against Germany. The ultimate cost was much too great.

I'm no expert on WW2, but according to someone who studies it over on YT, the reason Hitler invaded Poland was down to false intelligence. There was some fighting going on between Poland and Germany at the time, but Hitler got a report the Polish were planning on attacking the Germans, but the report over-estimated the size of that planned attack by a factor of ten. On receiving this news it appeared Hitler then gave the orders to send in the boys. As soon as that had happened the UK had the propaganda it needed to convince the fuckwit public that they should sacrifice their empire over it. So it was kind of started under false pretences. Was there some CIA-type shady business going on to create WW2? I also heard something along the lines of rather than we having to plead with the Americans to fight the Germans, there was some evidence to suggest it was the Americans who wanted the war. I think this was through some diplomatic communication, although I'm a bit patchy on this story. I think they hinted something like if you guys want to go in and attack the Germans you can count on our support.

(b) anyone who mentions the economics of being in or out of World War 1 or 11 can be bought and sold and as such is a slave and his opinion is not worth having.

As am I, obviously. I don't know if I am a senior or a junior boomer Red. but I am certainly not as young as I was. In fact I am so old that I can remember watching a protest on the TV and sometime in the 1960s, when of my uncles tapped his tin leg and said that he lost the original during the 1939 - 45 kerfuffle so that the idle little sods on the box could spout whatever bollocks was currently fashionable. To be fair, he accepted the right of the protestors to protest. And one of his delights was to load his tin leg with sweets and then stomp around the house, much to the delight of his grandchildren because the leg had holes in the bottom and left trails of chocolates behind.
I have many deep thoughts on this matter, but right now I am knackered so I will continue tomorrow  |

See what you make of the rest of the channel, but from what I gather then author is a bit of an expert in this time in history judging by the amount of material covered in the channel.
By the way, my original comment was slightly inaccurate. It was attacks on Germans in Poland which were reported to him as ten time the real figure.

I'd also note in passing an earlier thread on a related topic Adolf Hitler on 'England as a ally'. A few posts in the so-called Schmundt Mitschrift gets a mention. This was considered at Nuremberg as evidence that Hitler considered an invasion and occupation of Poland as an essential prerequisite for his grand scheme for conquering Lebensraum in the USSR. |
