Bacteria can form biofilms in the body (especially on prosthetic implants) that antibiotics struggle to deal with. Allicin (which is made from Garlic) breaks down these biofilms allowing the antibiotics to do their job (in some cases with much lower doses than normally used). Often antibiotics are not needed ... the body's defences deal with the bugs after treatment with Allicin. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allicin"Allicin has been studied for its potential to treat various kinds of multiple drug resistance bacterial infections". Pure Allicin is sold by Boots (Allicin Max) ... as an "Immune stimulant" My experience: The hospital acquired bug would normally have been treated with a high dose of a specific antibiotic ... but my kidneys wouldn't have been able to cope. The treatment could have killed me. A high dose of Allicin + one eighth of the lowest dose normally used of the antibiotic resulted in a "miracle cure" within a couple of days. My consultant had prescribed half the normal lowest dose ... which caused my blood potassium to shoot up to a dangerous level and I had to stop taking it ... so I later took half a tab a day (instead of 2 tabs) and the maximum recommended amount of Allicin. The "miracle cure" involved a change from "struggling to walk" and "mental confusion" to "walking at a brisk pace" and being very much "on the ball". The bug I had was Stenotrophomonas maltophilia. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stenotrophomonas_maltophiliaThe antibiotic used was Cotrimoxazole

I don't know much about the subject, but an approach that involved giving your immune system some mechanical advantage seems very promising to me.

Interesting post and a very relevant subject as we are being told the number of effective antibiotics is dwindling.
I only take any drug very reluctantly (and no never done illegal drugs) I’ve always thought antibiotic drugs are there when the situation is in extremis as in your case certainly were.

I don't know much about the subject, but an approach that involved giving your immune system some mechanical advantage seems very promising to me. Such things were once my day job. Alas no longer www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0924224416300073The above abstract states the mechanism is poorly understood at the molecular level. The prof who ran the dept at my Alma Mater made his name on researching the ability of certain bacteria to adapt to organosulphate compounds back in the 70’s but was diverted to working on treatments for organophosphorus chemicals when it was feared east german and russian invading troops might exploit them as chemical weapons. Dashed unethical these commies you know and all that … I think it sounds a most promising direction. I wonder how long it will be before someone within the industry starts a campaign to derail the direction this might go in. Reducing the LD50 of expensive pharmaceuticals to one twentieth by mere Co-administration of an extract of a plant material anyone can grow in a flower border can’t be good for CEO bonus rewards can it.

I haven't been able to find the link again but some time ago I read about research in China into treatment of Sepsis/Septic shock. All the patients received the usual treatment ... with half of them also being given a herbal medication. Those given the herb had a significantly higher survival rate and those on the herb who survived were in much better condition than those who didn't get the herb. The herb used had "Yellow" in its name. There were about 70 patients involved. The doctors didn't know which patients had been given the herb. I just Googled "Sepsis Yellow China" ... the herb is Safflower yellow www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4775808/

A side effect of the various pills i’m on for the diabetes and heart failure is a nasty susceptibility to infection which prolongs wound healing times. The stuff mentioned as available over the counter at boots is also delivered by amazon and a supply of it arrives here later today.
It may do nothing but theres really only one way to find out !

Wow. Like WOW.
Look one of the troubles i have is with my eyes. Thanks to the eye surgery i sometimes get all sorts of problems in the corner of my eye. It gets all red and sore and gungy and more than once tge only answer has been prescribed antibiotic eye drops.
Cant remember the antibiotic now. Starts with a C i think
Point is i have had one of these grumbling for a week and was resigning myself to a chat with the GP
I took one of these yesterday afternoon and another when i woje up
It’s bloody well gone. All of it
As a biochemist i KNOW there is a compound in tears that literally munches on bacteria like the hospital flesh eating bug munches on muscle tissue and maybe i’m going out on a limb here but i think this stuff flowing through the tissues near this problem site has added to the weaponry available and actually did what it said on the tin.
My word. I’m impressed.

Allicin is a compound found in Garlic if I recall correctly may even have taken when I was younger not sure.

Allicin is a compound found in Garlic if I recall correctly may even have taken when I was younger not sure. yes indeed. The material is a short lived by product produced when the cells of the plant are damaged and provide the characteristic odour. I am not sure how much of it survived the process of making some garlic based herbal supplements that were around some years ago

Progress report: After two weeks of the antibiotic + Allicin treatment the complex pattern of symptoms I'd been experiencing for nearly 3 years have completely cleared up. When I first started dialysis I was told that I could expect to become debilitated ... like most of the other patients in the unit ... due to "deterioration of my kidney function". I suspect that a lot of the patients' symptoms are being caused by this bug that colonised various parts of my body. Online sites describe it as an emerging problem for dialysis units. The manager of the unit has "shown interest" (What is needed is a much higher degree of infection control than is currently the case).
