Fine Gael senator Regina Doherty said last year there are 'probably around nine genders' when she was addressing the Scottish parliament's equalities committee about gender recognition laws in Ireland.
Senator McDowell said he is questioning whether 'transgender' is a gender, and what genders there are besides male and female. 'I don't believe there is any,' he said.
'I was reading on one site there are 72 genders. If these are protected categories, what are we protecting?' He said the current gender definition is 'too broad', adding that there are some 'completely bizarre' genders out there and that the Bill needs to be more precise in its language.
