The Oxford English Dictionary states you may refer to a court or meetng as a kangaroo court if you disapprove of it because it is unofficial or unfair, and is intended to find someone guilty.A kangaroo court is defined by wikipedia as a court that, among other things, may ignore due process and come to a predetermined conclusion. Both definitions fit, and therefore, Johnson was not wrong describing it as such.

Who the hell do these people think they are? Not content with defenestrating a democratically elected prime minister, who won an 80-seat majority three and a half years ago, the pipsqueaks on the Commons privileges committee have now taken aim at his supporters.

Those MPs and peers who had the audacity to criticise Hattie Harman's lynch mob stand accused of undermining the 'integrity' of Parliament.

Jacob Rees-Mogg and others are said to have attempted to put undue pressure on members of the committee and by extension attacked the very legitimacy of parliamentary democracy.

Their crime was to accuse the committee of being a 'kangaroo court' determined to find Boris Johnson guilty of misleading the House. They waged an 'unprecedented and co-ordinated' campaign across newspapers, television, radio and social media to inhibit the work of Hattie's impartial seekers of truth and justice.

'It had significant personal impact on individual members and raised significant security concerns,' the poor dears wail in a 'special' report published yesterday.

Red Rum makes a good point. If the Privileges Committee is seen in a bad light, the whole of parliament, not just the House of Commons will be negatively affected. The Government and British politics itself loses some of its credibility.

Jacob Rees Mogg also made the same point as Red Rum, in that the ripples spread wider than Harman's kangaroo court. In comments made in a Daily Telegraph article on 17th June Sir Jacob expanded on the same theme .... here's an extract:

There is also the risk that this could go further. Following criticism of its work, the privileges committee wants to hold another investigation, this time into protecting MPs from “formal or informal” attack. This is verbal not physical, but it shows a desire to return to the arrogance of an 18th century Parliament where even reporting on the House could be punished.

This ought to concern the Government, for if political institutions look foolish so does the Government.

The job of politicians is to involve themselves in debate, and that requires that they may be criticised for the way they conduct themselves or for the decisions they make. There are rules of conduct in the Chamber, but outside it is legitimate to question the capability and competence of fellow MPs.

That the House of Commons has decided to do something does not make its action either wise or legitimate. Any prime minister or chief whip who allows the Commons to stand on its dignity in this way risks bringing politics into ridicule and it is in their power to stop it. Indeed, it is a pity that they did not stop the privileges committee earlier. As it has overreached in its vindictiveness.

As has the position of Harriet Harman as chairman of the committee. A committee that proposes to act in a quasi-judicial manner must not be seen to be at risk of being partial. Like Caesar’s wife, it must be above suspicion. This was made clear by another parliamentary committee, the judicial committee of the House of Lords. As Lord Hoffmann was a director and chairman of Amnesty International Charity Limited, it set aside its own judgment in a case concerning Augusto Pinochet because of the risk of appearing partial. It is extraordinary that the privileges committee has not held itself to the same standard. A select committee chairman is the most influential figure in any report, and because of the perception of partiality the report ought to be set aside.

Contagion is a real risk from the shocking spectacle we witnessed with the Privileges Committee, and well done to both Red Rum and Sir Jacob for pointing out it wouldn't stop at the committee room's doors.
