The next time someone claims that Labour would have handled the pandemic better show them this.. Did not read key documents. Did not know that pandemic influenza was a 'tier 1 risk' even today. Said he had no experience or knowledge of pandemics despite being Health Minister for 4 years.

Even if the government had told the civil service to prioritise Brexit over Covid - of which there's no evidence anyway - they simply wouldn't have done it. The civil service have never done anything about Brexit except try to hinder it.

So civil servants did not get moves from working on pandemic preparations to work on Brexit? "Hugo Keith KC, counsel to the inquiry, challenged Reed over the priorities. He said that given a significant number of care home residents would probably die in a flu pandemic, “why did no one say we cannot afford to stop the pandemic preparedness?” She said no-deal Brexit had been a “real and present and credible threat” while a pandemic was “the risk of a threat”.
