It is the Daily Mail of course , so the stories relationship with truth may well be tangential but it suggests that RNLI donations have INCREASED from £7000 per day (£49000 per week) to £200,000 per week. Gosh how dreadful. Seems the majority seem to value saving lives.

Oh so there was just one freak week but overall revenue has plummeted? Odd that the article didn’t spell that out clearly. I wonder what they will do.

This is an odd FOI exchange Red.

Firstly the name used for correspondence - John Doe.  This is very much an Americanism where we use John Smith or Fred Bloggs suggesting tht the person making the FOI request was an American citizen. But then why would they care about UK Government and a UK charity.  Unless they were a US political organisation trying to make political points shit-stirring. Most odd. 

Secondly - the exchange seems incomplete - the Home Office told Mr Doe that it was not them and he should direct his enquiry to the Department of Transport.  It beggars belief to think he would not resubmit his FOI request to the right place yet that correspondence is not disclosed.  Could it be he got an answer that didnt fit with the political point he was seeking to make and hence Mr Doe has supressed it

Thirdly - why bother seeking the information this way anyway.  The information he was seeking is freely disclosed in the RNLI annual accounts were they list their income sources.  They do get some money from Government but not much. The amount is included within their other income (including money from Government) line which amounted to £1.5m in 2022.  It is not clear how much of that £1.5m came from Government (but some did) or for what (any lingering COVID support would be in that line) but it is clear that there was some small amount of money routing from government but at less than £1.5m not much.  

Total income from the public (donations and legacies) totalled over £200m and has been increasing steadily year on year.  They have cash and investments in the bank of just over one years cost spend an d again this has been increasing year on year so their financial position seems solid.  Evidently the GB Newswatchers seeking to make political capital out of members allegedly cancelling their direct debits en masse are factually wrong again.
