I think a new reply is needed to address a different point raised in the OP. The suggestion is that the people convicted firmly believe "they have done nothing wrong". Well let's face it that was the daily bleat of a certain Home Secretary about whom was it Anne Widdicombe declared there was something of the night ? Michael Howard, I believe. Serial incompetent and blamer of everyone except himself for whom the phrase "but i have done nothing wrong" was a sort of mantra. The problem in the criminal sense is that too many people committing crime in this country donn't see a problem because what they do is not a crime, or the law turns a blind eye to it giving the impression there is no crime. So John if someone signs a confession hang ‘em?

Tell me, did the people i mentioned sign a confession or were they banged 100% to rights by the evidence ?
And isn't confessing your sin the first stage to repentance ? See above ...

You forgot to mention the idiot bit. Anyway you also neglected to say when you posted this Whether you were referring to that before/after or the whole post.

I said earlier in the thread there were two groups of criminals being processed by our society’s courts today and divided them into two groups. Your response was to my second post and they were not linked. So perhaps if i expand my views a little. I quite strongly believe that as a society it is worth spending money to support those who having found themselves behind bars wish to explore ways of not continuing that experience. I do not at this stage want to limit in this thread ideas of what that help might be but can i assume you agree with me that keeping someone behind bars us a hugely expensive business and that spending money on ways that help them not be a future financial burden to the ministry of justice is a wise investment. The problem our prisons have is that they are wasting untold millions day in, day out on keeping all manner of heinous criminals with no intent whatsoever of mending their ways under lock and key lest they continue their mayhem. We used to hang these people which was a proven way of removing the threat they posed, at minimal expense to the law abiding public. I would wish to see this return for a great many currently enjoying their life behind bars. The money saved by not having to sustain their worthless existences is then available to aid those who wish to find ways NOT to return once their time is served. That’s it basically.
