US is miles ahead. They've made locking people up profitable. Yay capitalism. Yep, more than 2 million currently incarcerated in the Land of the Free. That's one way to fiddle the unemployment figures. We British are much smarter than that. We send the unemployables to university.

Yep, but not as an unemployable teenager. Is there a reason why you never quote people? It serves to let others know that you've responded to them. You enjoy the advantages of the notification facility, so why not extend them to everyone else?

Have it your way, Danny. There's no such thing as society, after all. We must all be self-reliant. If someone replies to our posts, we must look for it ourselves, and not rely on the forum's notification system to do it for us. Looking forward to your New World Order, by the way.

It is simple Einstein, if you are talking with a certain poster you quote them, if you are generalising you don't quote anyone.

Was Danny generalising when he posted 'not as an unemployable teenager, 'eh?', and 'Right oh, I won't', or was he responding to my specific posts and question? I'm going to go with the latter.

We need a hanging judge so to speak, the casual law breakers like the extinction lot should be arrested and jailed instantly, fat chance of that. The police are not fit to wear the uniform. America had for a time zero tolerance of crime, now crime is rampant everywhere, ordinary citizens are being shot daily, in shopping malls etc, and now its part of life. No one cares, and that attitude is now in britain. I think our courts see basically two types of criminal, one for whom there might be something useful to be gained in rehabilitation and spending time and money doing for want of a better word, that which is necessary to put them back on the straight and narrow, and the other irredeemable and for whom there is no possible way back.
We currently spend far too much money keeping those individuals under lock and key when in the past a long drop while wearing a short rope not after years and years of letting lawyers argue, but within a week of two of passing sentence, rid us of the threat of recidivism, and the waste of money that continuing to look after the worthless criminals drained from the budget available to help those for which there is hope.
Every time i say something like this some bleeding heart idiot says "yeah but what about the chance they didn't do it".
What Peter Sutcliffe, Ian Brady, Myra Hindley (the two Lord Longford rejoiced at saving from the rope, and the finest evidence we should have hung him and then them to follow) and who was that bloke from the police's own rank who was recently done for murder ? I'd like to hear why they should not dance the hemp fandango. It's simple economics

I think a new reply is needed to address a different point raised in the OP. The suggestion is that the people convicted firmly believe "they have done nothing wrong".
Well let's face it that was the daily bleat of a certain Home Secretary about whom was it Anne Widdicombe declared there was something of the night ?
Michael Howard, I believe. Serial incompetent and blamer of everyone except himself for whom the phrase "but i have done nothing wrong" was a sort of mantra.
The problem in the criminal sense is that too many people committing crime in this country donn't see a problem because what they do is not a crime, or the law turns a blind eye to it giving the impression there is no crime.
