Apparently their creditors don’t believe their politics are likely to improve the economy enough to settle their debts.
Shame I like the Telegraph, aside from allowing its wildly wrong (Right) political incursions into straight-forward news…

It's the only news I pay for, unless you count the indirect BBC licence. I just paid for a year, so hopefully the paper doesn't disappear. New ownership could improve it?

Not a single British newspaper is worth reading. They all lie to you.

...well tbh who the fuck would pay for the nonsense in the Guardian or Indy?.. So why are the Telegraph and Spectator titles up for sale?
Estimates are they'll raise around £600 million — that's about £400 million short of the £1 billion of outstanding loans.
Daily Mail owner, DMGT, is said to be sniffing around. Possibly an appropriate owner as the Telegraph has been steadily steering into the too-biased news peddling lane over the past few years.
Just hope its excellent wide range of sports coverage is maintained whoever gets it...

They were put up as collateral by the owners the Barclay brothers for a loan they got from HBOS (who Lloyds took over) - being profitable (and thus worth something) allowed them to be used as collateral. I doubt they will be sold to an existing media group who have newspapers in the UK - the front runners at the moment seem to be the Germans and some Middle Eastern Sheikhs.. I did see Elon Musk mentioned - gawd I hope not..

I did see Elon Musk mentioned - gawd I hope not.. One of my more elderly work colleagues recently told me of a visit he made to the Axel Springer group in Berlin, at the time when he was young and the East Germans had built the Wall. He told me about a viewing platform in the Springer Building that was almost on the wall and provided an informative view into the East. I was only 10 when the walk was pulled down, but I remember the TV coverage — even I where I was, it was “awesome” as my kids now say. All that is a lead up to giving my opinion that one more UK news outlet falling to overseas owners shouldn’t matter, provided it does its best to ensure truthful reporting — even if from a political stance. I form many of my opinions from a wide section US and European news media reports, in addition to UK outlets. Too many on here rely almost solely on Daily Mail and GB News for their opinions to really be taken seriously…

Knowing a little of the mindset of receivers, i have to say i agree with your line on this far more than the tune in the OP. The back story here is the Bermuda based shell company created by the rather dodgy IMO Barclay Brothers to run their media interests free of UK tax owes Lloyds Bank a billion quid and the Bank has put the shell company into receivership and is now offering these titles up for grabs to recoup what they can of the unpaid debt. I doubt the receivers would do the same had it been Owen Jones’ short lived and utterly bonkers attempt to crowdfund a pidcast design team using 1970’s financial principles to spend millions on what he hoped would oppose rather more shoestring budget operations. Thankfully little Owen’s whiny little voice never got the platform he hoped as his idea was strangled at birth having failed to raise more than 1% of the amount hoped IIRC Even socialists recognise a hopeless case. Even more so tbe champagne swilling ones

The Torygraph came and saw they just couldn't conquer. They thought they were bigger than the internet and found out they weren't. Nice try though. don't feel bad you are not the only ones who are in same field. Not that is saying you were like cattle to the slaughter, more like sheep not outstanding in your field.

Just hope its excellent wide range of sports coverage is maintained whoever gets it... My son-in-law is a journalist and used to work for The Times. He jumped ship and moved to The Daily Mail. Me thinking the DM is a trash paper compared to The Times asked him why on earth he didn't stay at The Times. He said the only paper with a future is the Daily Mail, he said every newspaper was in debt and struggling to sell copy, apart from The Daily Mail. That was a few years ago, he has since moved from the mail.
