243 years ago actually, on 2 June 1780. Still, it is nice to remember that there was once a time when we could manage a decent riot.
It was all about Catholic emancipation. Not that many people were keen on it, but when the mob demanded that Parliament repeal the act the latter told the former to fuck off. 18th century MPs were just as self serving and venal as today, but they had bottle.
