Just listened to someone who is an ex sea captain. He said any vessel that picks up people in the Channel does not have to bring them to England. He said under the laws of the sea they can be taken to any port the captain of the vessel who's picked them up considers to be the safest or most convenient. He then said, there is absolutely no reason why people picked up in the channel should not immediately be taken back to the safe country of France.

Very interesting Red.
This has just given me a great idea. We could start a charity. Buy a junk ship and have it patrolling the French coast and if it sees a a stricken vessel the do good charity rescues them and then takes them as close to home as is practical.

But presumably France does not necessarily have to allow them to disembark?

But presumably France does not necessarily have to allow them to disembark? International law says the captain of a vessel can disembark rescuees in any 'safe' port. Therefore, it would seem, if the French refused to allow said vessel to dock they would be in breach if international law. Having said that, when were the French ever bothered about adhering to the rules.

Someone my father heard of preferred to meet the rocks than agree to be rescued. So you see if a charity rescued an asylum vessel they can claim ownership of their boat lol!
