Former deputy PM has said he is stepping down from standing as an MP in the next election, reportedly over concerns for his young family due to the pressures of the job.
I guess the Tory Party is lucky he wasn’t elected leader at his last attempt or there’d need to be another official succession fight.
At the moment all the unofficial, but blatant, jockeying for Sunak’s position can be ignored…

If he had the Tory vote would have doubled and Starmer would have had to go back to prosecuting Jay walkers at the local magistrates' court

If he had the Tory vote would have doubled and Starmer would have had to go back to prosecuting Jay walkers at the local magistrates' court I guess we all have dreams. One of mine is that one day the Tory party will uncover enough able, honest, intelligent and generally reliable MPs among those on its benches to form a government that can run the country for the benefit of its people.
Unfortunately, I have to accept that it remains a dream...

He was about to lose his seat to the LibDems, typical bully behaviour, run away when the going gets tough.

He was about to lose his seat to the LibDems, typical bully behaviour, run away when the going gets tough. That was my thought too. The LibDems did very well there in the local elections and given his thin majority at the next election given current polling and the LibDems actively targeting his seat, seems inevitable that he would lose, so he's chosen not to bother. Personally I would have liked for him to stand on the basis of his record, but I'm not sad either.

I thought your dream was that the Tories would turn into Lib Dems and that the security guards at Morrisons' would touch their caps to you ?

Few Morrison's security guards round here wear caps, but a touch of the forelock and a reserved parking space near the door would be appreciated.
Perhaps then, if a Tory administration of the calibre of Thatcher's would emerge, the dream could be close to becoming reality...

Until then, you'll continue to vote Labour, then.

The phrase "Rats from a sinking ship" comes to mind
His majority at the 2019 general election was just 2,700, with the Lib Dems in second place
The queue to leave Parliament by Tories is growing

There must be around 40 Tory MPs who have said they’re going…

Until then, you'll continue to vote Labour, then. God knows, I don’t. My current MP enjoys about double the votes of the rest and, while she’s now way past her usefulness, it depends who replaces her. But I doubt Labour will lose here, so I’ll need to get involved in the national scene to have the slightest chance of influencing anything…
