Founded in 1990 when we were in the EEC. Continued to exist all through when we were in the EU. That's an indicator of how long the problem of marine sewage discharges has been going on for. But suddenly all the remoaners are blaming Brexit for it, rather than the dire state of our sewers and our water companies. France has the same problems we do. www.cleanriverstrust.co.uk/the-seine-a-capital-sewer/

FFS. No one is blaming Brexit for it. can you NEVER see anything but the same ubersimplistic?
The UK is to blame for NOT FOLLOWING THE EU DIRECTIVE. And for ignoring it to pay off shareholders instead of using the money paid to a monopoly to invest in infrastructure. Now you will have to pay a second time .
Absolutely nothing to do with Brexit. It has to do with privatisation of a monopoly which is not how capitalism works, the the biggest rip off of the British public since the South Sea Bubble.

It's been pointed out that the water companies were acquired reasonably cheaply because the govt reasoned that underinvestment in infrastructure would have to be made good by the new owners. It didn't happen, and shareholders reaped the profits...

THE ARTICLE IS FROM TWENTY TWELVE!! And does not say what you suggest unless you cant read. Brussels, 17 October 2012) The European Commission is deliberately promoting privatization of water services as one of the conditions being imposed as part of bailouts, it acknowledged in a letter to civil society groups on 26 September 2012 (see below). EU Commissioner Olli Rehn's directorate was responding to questions posed in an open letter concerning the European Commission’s role in imposing privatisation through the Troika in Greece, Portugal and other countries. The civil society groups have today written to Commissioner Rehn to demand that he stop “any further pressure to impose water privatisation conditionalities” (see the letter below). Note the words "promoting" and in discussions about bailouts. Hardly forcing anyone to do anything. And the countries involved pushed back hard enough that privatisation never happened. And looks not to happen in the near future. greekreporter.com/2023/03/09/water-privatization-greece/It is utter folly and morally bankrupt ( and unconstitutional in Greece) tto privatise a monopoly. Further, public infrastructure is publically owned in Portugal. Independently of whether utilities are established under public or private law, all infrastructure is publicly owned. There is only limited private sector participation in the provision of water and sanitation services. Storm water drainage is directly provided by the municipalities. en.wikipedia.org › wiki Water supply and sanitation in Portugal - Wikipedia
