Starmer is full of shit today tomorrow and every other day, his followers of fashion will repeat everything he says as a good idea.

I absolutely LOVE this idea... Me too. As I said elsewhere, it's going to be about as popular as a turd in a swimming pool. I think that the more that the electorate hear from Starmer, the less his chances of winning anything let alone a workable majority.

I do not agree The Squeezed Middle, I think the vast majority of fair minded people recognise that its reasonable for our Polish neighbour, workmate or friend down the pub who has lived here several years, works in the local factory and maybe brought up a young family, to be able to vote in elections.
Dare I go so far as to say ... that a British born person, who lays in bed all day, living off benefits and who does not go out to work has LESS RIGHT to vote.

Steady on - you've just described a whole swathe of Labour voters!

This is what happens in scotland. Legally resident foreign nationals get the vote .
You know , that starmer is a bit more clued up than i gave him credit for. If he lets johhny foreigner get the vote , they are going to be sympathetic to labour , and in any new eu referendum , unlike the last brexit vote , their votes could tip the balance massively in favour of remain.
A canny man that starmer , stacking the decks in favour of the eu. With the latest reports of the tories imploding and at each others throat ,and many of them turning coat and supporting rejoin , i think starmer is on a win win here.

How can we remain when we have left already?

I absolutely LOVE this idea, and it is 100% perfectly legitimate and the right thing to do Europeans who have Settled Status in the UK, who live and work here, and pay taxes here, should be able to vote in general elections. Further more, a Labour government may also give votes to 16 and 17 year olds, and why not ?, if they are old enough to work, pay taxes, fight for their country, why shouldn't they be allowed to vote. They're not, I've already explained they can't fight until they're 18.

Nothing to do with tipping the balance in elections, its got a lot to do with FRANCHISE or SUFFRAGE, and if a person pays taxes to a country as a resident, then that person in my view should be able to vote, its all about fairness and equality.

You labour party wideos cant fool me , with your dodgy 40 % referendum rules , and labour party vote riggers like tariq mahmood .
Good old keir stacking the cards in favour of rejoin. I tell you sid , labour are too fast for us mere plebs arent they?
once a pro european always a pro european eh sid? starmer almost helped over turn brexit anti democratically in the commons 2016-2019. I think he is going to manage it this time

You might be onto something. Starmer is someone for whom promises are purely tactical to get elected, then he'll do whatever he really wants once in. And he has always been a Remainer. And I know many who were in my former local party who supported him purely because of that. And the fact is that both demographics and the tide of opinion is working against the Brexit dream and Starmer probably knows it. The elderly mostly voted for Brexit. In the seven years since then quite a few of them will no longer be with us. The young mostly voted Remain. The vast majority of them are still here. And 7 years worth of young people too young to have voted in 2016 are voters now. And most of them are more pro-EU than anti. Added to this inexorable demographic shift - by which the Brexit vote is slowly dying whilst the Remainer/Rejoiner vote is slowly growing - is the fact that growing numbers of people are beginning to see that they were lied to, and that Brexit has been an economic disaster. So the tide is probably turning in Starmer's favour on this one. But he'll make sure of it by telling whatever lies are necessary in an election campaign anyway.

As i told borkie , when he spouted his latest "conservative nuggets of wisdom" ( no laughing at the back please) recently , regarding how the young move right as they grow old and replenish the tory rank and file , even that old adage is dying a death.
So by giving the kids a vote( as labour supported in scotland) , and johnny foreigner the vote as well in england , labour could be playing the long game here and locking out tory brexiters for years to come .
Poor auld sid trying and failing to dress this up in democracy , but as you imply , starmers cynical manipulation as ever is at play not anything else. He is not and never will be interested what the mere plebs think , merely voting fodder.
Millennials are shattering the oldest rule in politics
Western conservatives are at risk from generations of voters who are no longer moving to the right as they age
Millennials — born between 1981 and 1996 — started out on the same trajectory, but then something changed. The shift has striking implications for the UK’s Conservatives and US Republicans, who can no longer simply rely on their base being replenished as the years pass.

16 and 17 year olds are not allowed to fight for their country ( it isn't 1916), under 18s may enlist but they cannot go on Operations.
If Starmer continues to come up with such absurd proposals as allowing children and foreigners to vote (presumably for him as no one else will) then Labour are doomed, which is good news. Other startling proposals are
a) making it easier to go on strike. b) allowing workers to have the right to work at home. ( presumably without supervision, guidance or oversight). c) introducing a 4 day week because it is more efficient.
The bloke is as stupid as Corbyn, and it is regrettable that some people will vote for this bilge, those that wish to destroy the country from within.

You cant underestimate him playing the two party system. I believe he is a poor politician , and the worse labour leader in my lifetime by far , but he isnt stupid. Unlucky perhaps up till now. wooden definetly. Dangerous ? Maybe?
The tories are in a mess. Lets be real here. They are turning on sunak , the economy is in a mess , brexit has been terrible.
People arent going to put up with this shower much longer , and starmer knows this fine well , as evidenced by the polls.
I dont think starmers wee blips like giving johhnny foreigner in england the vote are gonnae save the tories now. Each day passes , they look increasingly out of things , with the public now having had enough of their nonsense.
It will be a sad day when yet another new labour government takes control , but once more thats how it looks. Not through any sort of popularity of course , just the fact they are the second horse in a two horse race in a system designed to keep dumb and dumber in charge.
