India to push for UK to hand over Koh-i-Noor diamond as part of 'colonial reckoning' that 'dwarfs' Elgin Marble demands
The diplomatic effort to reclaim the artefacts centres on the Koh-i-Noor diamond, one of the largest cut diamonds in the world. The Koh-i- has been in the British royal family's crown jewels since 1849.
India's "reckoning with the past" would be the largest repatriation attempt the UK has faced yet, the Telegraph reported - dwarfing claims made by the Greek government for the Elgin Marbles, held in the British Museum.
The push comes from the top of the Indian government and is one of the priorities for Narendra Modi, the country's Prime Minister.
The efforts to get the treasures returned could even affect trade talks between the UK and India.

For me, there are things higher up on the list that should be returned (the Parthenon Marbles, the Benin Bronzes, the Rosetta Stone, etc), but if the diamond was taken as Spoils of War - sure. Give it back.

Along with Ghandi's sandals, presumably.

Along with Ghandi's sandals, presumably. Now now squeaks we dont want any of your racist tropes or xenophobic stereotypes in this thread. This is a serious subject.
All those treasures you stole from the indians , not to mention the estimated £45 trillion extracted over two centuries to fund all the stately homes in blighty and you can see why they are a wee bit pissed off.
The way you surrender so meekly , you wouldnt stop them taking ghandis sandals anyway. Today , you deny being a brexiter , tomorrow , you will be denying england had an empire .
You make saddo khan look respectable with a backbone of steel with immovable morals so you do.

Sober up, Thomas, you are British. You became so when your failed little empire left you bankrupt and since that date you were profitting on the same empire as England, which became the British Empire.

On the same theme - but closer to home..
During a visit to the British Museum a few years ago I was struck that the vast majority of the Lewis Chessmen are in England, and Scotland only have a few, representative, pieces.
Shouldn't that be reversed?

Perhaps it's worth pointing out that the Scots and the Irish were also prodigious slave owners. Hence why so many black people have Scottish and Irish surnames.

When England abolished slavery the Scots were demanding compensation. They maybe able to fool themselves under Scottish education, but it sort of ends there. I would also imagine all of the Irish praise from Joe Irish Biden maybe the cause for so many black Americans turning away from the Irish bastard. His approval ratings have been plummeting from this area of American society.

When England abolished slavery the Scots were demanding compensation. So were the English slave owners. And everyone got compensated (apart from the victims, of course). As for Abolition - there were a large number of influential Scottish Abolitionists, too (and I don't know about Ireland, but I'd guess there, also).

I agree it was probably more a Scottish and Irish Empire than an English one. Once Scotland got in on the act after the Union there was no holding her back and the sons of Empire were largely Scottish. It was a Scotsman that stopped the Thugs in India and another that stopped the delightful little Indian proclivity of burning alive widows on the funeral pyres of their husbands. Those two things alone probably saved millions of lives during the existent of British rule in India. What bastards we were.

It's merely to bring balance to the stage, because Thomas likes to live in an alternate reality.
It was an Englishman who led the movement to abolish slavery. America was very reluctant to follow suit, so it took decades to get them to stop whilst the British Empire was being used to stop slavers.

It was the slave owners who sought compensation which in the context of the times was a reasonable expectation as they were effectively having their property removed from them.
